I have always found computer microphones lacking, mostly in volume. Niether the 1/4" jack or the 1/8" jack mics make a difference, even USB mics are no different. The only microphone I ever used that actually gave some volume was one that had a built in preamp and a AA battery inside it. Aside from that I have given up trying to get a microphone to function with any power at all, short of using a preamplifier prior to going thru the sound card or motherboards sound. They all suck.

Most computer mics are whats called the condenser type, their almost always the 1/8" plug type and the condenser mic will give more volume than what you bought. The 1/4" mics are usually impedence mics and they require preamplification to function with a computers input. I hope i don't confuse you here but I once amplified a mic by running it thru and old hand held portable cassette player by utilizing its 1/8" mic input and putting one of those cassette inserts inside it (the kind that looked like a cassette tape but had a wire coming off of it instead with a 1/8" jack). I used the mic while the cassete player was running on record but since there was no tape in the cassette adapter (the one with the plug coming off it) nothing actually got recorded, just transfered to the adapters plug and into the computer or whatever you need to record to. The portable casset player also had an equilzer on the face that allowed me to fool around with the sound quality of the output.

Here is a picture of the type of cassette adapter I'm talking about:
    Code:

This would be inserted into the portable player, the player has to have a microphone input for you to put your mic into. the adapter plug goes to the PC and the player is put on record (with batteries or a brick type power adapter to run it). The players volume control and equilizer if it has one then function to amplify and condition the sound output.

I don't know about the feasibility of using the 1/4 inch jack mic with an adapter to connect to a 1/8 inch jack on your computer.

But, mic issues seem to be a problem for many users. With my Win XP desktop PC, the sound software installed with my sound card requires enabling a "mic booster" feature before I can hear sound from the mic. The software is a C-Media product, from the card manufacturer.

With my Windows Vista notebook PC, I do not need to enable any "mic booster" feature before I can hear sound from the mic. So, the technique for successfully using a mic seems to vary from one system to another, depending on your hardware and software.

If you've never seen a "mic booster" feature in your system, then I would presume a mic should work as long as it's not muted. Actually, I'm inclined to think the mic with the 1/4 inch plug should work. So, I'd suspect there are other issues. Still, is purchase of a mic with 1/8 inch plug an option, in case your mic is incompatible? I have one of the headsets shown here that's worked well with my notebook PC: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826193025
