I have a Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173 notebook. Thursday, the machine started running at about 100MHZ (usually 1.8Ghz processor). It takes forever to do anything. I used the recovery discs, and took the machine back to factory condition - still no change. It did this once before about 2 years ago, and I updated the BIOS and it seemed to to fix. Toshiba has not released a newer bios, and I can't seem to re-install the same BIOS because it is not a newer version. I think something is really down-clocking the processor, but I can't find a way to get around it. At this point the unit is practically useless, and I'm about ready to swing a hammer through it :banghead

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Look in your bios for a reset to default option, which should reset your bios back to factory.

Thanks for the suggestion - I tried it and it didn't make a difference. The machine is still running as slow as ever. What's interesting is that as soon as I boot the machine the fan comes on immediately, but when windows kicks in, the fan stops.

Anyone with any other ideas - or failing that, have a really fun suggestion about creative and innovative ways to destroy a laptop???

    Thanks

sounds like Cool&Quiet maybe mixed with some throttling....

try cleaning out all of the dust from the fan ports of the notebook and try clearing the CMOS

O.k. - might have some more information on this subject. Just installed motherboard monitor 5, and the CPU temperature is reading 167degreesF and the case is 143degreesF. I think I have a serious down-throttling issue.

    Ideas anyone ???
