I live in Clarksville TN and CDE lightband now offers 1 gigabit internet speed for a mere $349 per month to residential customers. :drool Are there any applications that would take adavantage of this speed or is this for allowing alot of computersmon the same network.

    Hi

Streaming media would take advantage of this, while you really would not need 1GB speeds for smooth streaming it would help.

Downloading any applications and cloud computing apps would like good speeds, so you could multitask,

BUT the kicker is $349 per month for something that the average person will not utilise fully is excessive, most home users should be happy with 10-50mb/s as that will do almost any task.

1GB would be great for a SME company with multiple PCs on a network, may also be good if you have multiple PCs, Media streaming TVs and say Xbox 360s at home and all wanting bandwidth, again for home use cost is a negative,

Do they have lower speeds as half that would be good but could be cheaper.

Pretty expensive for what they are offering.. There is alot you can do with a gig connection, but when it comes down to it, once it gets behind the Router into your LAN, you are limited by how the devices are connected to the LAN. Will not make Netflix or Amazon any faster to streaming devices, but useful for downloading files.

What are they offering for upload speed on this gig down connection?

The standard is 1/10th so 100Mb?

That may not be the case. Not all are going to be the same for upload.

If the 1 gigiabit speed were divided over 100 apartments, that would be $3.50 for an average of 10 megabits per apartment.

Having Ft. Campbell there was one of the reasons, the other was to nudge out Google from laying Fiber in the area. Just gave the utility an edge.

Our city owned utility has Fiber all over town, and there was talk about going into the business of what CDE is doing, but thanks to our elected officials and that Insight/Comcast forced them not to move forward with the project, we are stuck with the meager offerings we have with U-Verse & Comcast.

Now of course the price is a little steep for 1gig what CDE is selling, so I can see it only being picked up by a small minority that can actually afford those costs.

Google fiber is only $70. Eventually Google will own every thing.
