    Hello again majorgeeks,

I havent been on this website in a while because i havent had many computer problems. But now this isnt a problem as such but it is nagging me.

My mum (i am 15) pays our ISP about £20 a month so that our family gets 10 megabit p/s broadband. That is 1.25 Megabytes p/s rite?

But when i go onto the internet and download all of my files the highest i seem to possably scrape, once in a while is 1000 kbs then it shoots strieght down, to about 350 kilobytes per second, depending on the server.

Just so you dont tell me what i know (sorry people have stated the obvious to me a lot thinking i know nothing):

    1) I do know that the further away the server geographically the slower my connection will be. yet when i download off fast local servers i dont get the juice.

    2) My wireless network 54 magabits p/s is capable of transfering the more than i am reciving in meg easy. Plus the situation is similar on the main pc downstairs.

here is a speed conversion table, for my wireless adapter.

    Here is the result:

    =54 Mbps [Megabit-per-second] (my wireless)
    =54000 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
    =6.75 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
=6750 KB/sec[Kilobyte-per-second](way more than the 350MBs i am used to)

    http://www.mediaroad.com/products/speedcheck/free_tools/unit_convert/

    3) I do realise that i sheare my internet with about 35 (if i remember rightly) other people, so it will plummet at peak times.

    4) this has been happening for about 5 months and it is not based on a sudden plummit i am whineing about. i have downloaded hundreds of files, from hundreds of locations, hundreds of differant times of the day.

    5) i know the differance between Mbs and MBs

Please please please can you give my any help on why it could be happening so the next time i ring NTL they dont just say "your fine at our end, its your network it isnt capable of it" (even though it happens downstairs also as i said.)

Thank you very much in advance

    UKARMYCADET

There is a graph of the speeds i should be getting, this is for any ISP

Well your Megabits and MegaBytes are all OK. :)

Thing is you say you don't get anywhere near your (theoretical) maximum of 1.25MB/s even when downloading off fast local servers. You say that you know that distance has an effect which it does to quite some degree for instance an 8MB service would only give around 5MB if you lived more than about a mile from the servers. With NTL they seem to relay a lot of the data you are attempting to download to places such as Leicester.

Speak to their tech support (0845 6500125) it may be worth it. I had a similar problem and although NTL said "Nothing wrong at our end Guv" it suddenly improved the next time I logged on. :)

    BROADBAND
    =========================
    this ones simple:

this is for broad band connections. I didn't try it on dial up but might work for dial up.

1.make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.
    2. start - run - type gpedit.msc
    3. expand the "local computer policy" branch
    4. expand the "administrative templates" branch
    5. expand the "network branch"
    6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window
    7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting
    8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item
    9. where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0 reboot if you want to but not necessary on some systems
your all done. Effect is immediate on some systems. some need re-boot. I have one machine that needs to reboot first, the others didn't. Don't know why this is.

This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, XP seems to want to reserve 20% of the bandwidth for its self. Even with QoS disabled, even when this item is disabled. So why not use it to your advantage. To demonstrate the problem with this on stand alone machines start up a big download from a server with an FTP client. Try to find a server that doesn't max out your bandwidth. In this case you want a slow to medium speed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for a couple of minutes to get stable. The start up another download from the same server with another instance of your FTP client. You will notice that the available bandwidth is now being fought over and one of the clients download will be very slow or both will slow down when they should both be using the available bandwidth. Using this "tweak" both clients will have a fair share of the bandwidth and will not fight over the bandwidth.

Instead of doing all that, one can always, uncheck QoS from their "Local Area Connection Properties." :) Or just uninstall the service altogether. :)

BTW, gpedit.msc is located on XP Pro only. Though, one can always copy the file from an xp pro cd/box. ;)

Well, I could have written how to do what ye did, with the registry, via command line. But, I decided not to. ;)

Ok i have been messing with my setting and done what tim told me to, and my speeds have popped up to about 8 Mbs, i also did some downloading on the downstaits computer and that one is a at about 9.5 Mbs now so i aint complaining now. But if it plummets again i will ring NTL and see what they can do. Thanks again guys
