I've been trying to re-install The Sims and when I click on the install
    button I get a
"16 bit windows subsystem" error window that says,

"C:\DOCUMEN~1\OWNER\LOCALS~1\TEMP A temporary file needed for inialization could not be created or could not be written to.Make sure that the directory path exsists and disk space is available. Choose 'close' to terminate the application."

I have no idea what to do, I had no problem when I installed it
the first time. I'm running xp that was already installed on my HP Pavilion 520w I bought it. I have been to the game company's site and they told me to go to \windows\repair and copy the file config.nt from there to \windows\system32and to go to \windows\repair and copy the file autoexec.nt from there and put it into \windows\system32. I have also been to the microsoft site and searched for the message I'm getting and had no results. I have done that and still get the same message. I have had this error message show up with some other games I've tried to install and with some updates for windows. I have emptied the Temp folder and there is plenty of disk space. Thanks in advance for any help.

I've been there and that didn't work.

Are you sure it doesn't say something like: 16 bit Windows Subsystem C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT

If so, then you need to copy the file located within C:\WINDOWS\repair\autoexec.nt to c:\windows\system32

    Then try again.

I am sure. I have posted exactly what it says. The message window is titled 16 bit windows subsystem.

Try cleaning out your temp files, via ccleaner: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191

    Another thing to try:

It stated that it couldn't create or write to your temp directory.

Can you create a directory located within: C:\DOCUMEN~1\OWNER\LOCALS~1\TEMP <---- can you access this folder?

Are you logged in as the administrator?

Is this "The Sims" or is this "The Sims 2"?

You could also try installing The Sims in Compatibility Mode.

It is the original Sims game, not the deluxe or anything like that.

I ran that program and cleaned out the Temp folders and still got the same message. I made a folder in the C:\DOCUMEN~1\OWNER\LOCALS~1\TEMP and still got the same error message. Should it be in the TEMP folder or the Temporary Internet Files folder? I ask because I tried to make one in the Temporary Internet Files folder and there was no option to make one in there.

How can I install it in Compatibility Mode?

    Forgive my haste.

Right click the programs installer, then properties, then compatibility mode. (Even works on CD drive contents)

You don't have to choose 98 or 95 (not saying you shouldn't), but if they don't work, try another and play around with the combinations.

Having said that, XP is pretty good at running older games, some though just won't run, but you do have other options.

I didn't have any luck with compatibility mode. I'm sure that it's not a problem with the game because I've been getting the same message while trying to install or re-install some other software.

You did completely uninstal everything corrupted first?

Try theefools' suggestion, as well as emptying your temp folders.

    CCleaner is very good.

I did run the ccleaner and tried what he said and didn't have any luck. Everything that was installed with the game has been deleted except for some objects I downloaded for the game, but they are in a seperate folder, not the one the game was installed in.

This MAY help. But, from what the original poster stated, none of these errors actually came up.

    Strange.

    I'll check ntcompatible.

Just about everything I have seen:

    Is the way to go.

That's why I said earlier I'm surprised it didn't work, as I too believe that is the solution.

I agree, but, I did post something similar, in question. But, the result was in the negative. As in, what I suggested didn't work.

    Or was it incorrectly reproduced.?

Yes, I know. I agree with you still. ;)

I'm not sure what happened but I think when I ran the ccleaner it might have deleted the system 32 folder because I don't see it in the windows folder. It was there 2 days ago when I tried to copy those files from the repair folder to the system 32 folder.

CCleaner doesn't delete the system32 folder.

Do you have hidden files and folders showing?

Anyway, I suggest reading all the replies again and follow the advice in the links as I believe that's your answer.

I can't do those because the system 32 folder in not in the windows folder. When I ran the ccleaner there were some files from system 32 that were in the report it gave me of files to be deleted.

I doubt your PC would even run without system32.

I did a search for the system 32 folder and did get some results for it but I can't find it if I follow the directory to it. It's not in the windows folder, what am I missing?

Make sure you show hidden files and folders if you are worried about seeing System32.

Right now I'm thinking about doing a system recovery and see if that solves the problem but I'm wooried about it not working. Should I try that or look for another solution since nothing else has worked for me so far?

I ended up doing a destructive system recovery and things are working great now, I was able to install the game with no problems, and some other minor problems are fixed. Thanks for the help even though I didn't have any luck with it.
