I reinstalled win98 a few months ago when I didn't get XP to work.

    Things were fine.

Then, somewhere along the way, I screwed things up royally. I've tried to download drivers from Intel so many times, I can't remember what started this a few weeks ago.

For now, I would just like to restore more than 16 colors in win98.

    When I go to Display/Settings, I see
    Display:
    (Unknown Monitor) or (Unknown Device).

Also, Intel Extreme Graphics in Control Panel doesn't do anything when I double click it. I think it used to show something.

It's a DFI Intel motherboard, 82845 graphics controller.

    Monitor is Viewsonic 6.

    What should I try?

    Thank you.

    Re-installed win9x1361.exe .

Cannot change to more than 16 colors.

When I click on Display/Settings/Advanced, it shows the driver but at the top says Unknown Device.

But if you go to the device manager (right click My Computer>Properties>Device Manager then click on the Plus sign next to display adapter what does it have there? Any yellow exclamation marks for instance?

Yes it shows up in Device Manager with a yellow exclamation mark.

Also yellow exclamation marks beside 4 USB controllers and one beside Keyboard.

    No Monitor line listed.

Well the exclamation marks generally indicate a missing or corrupt driver. The first thing I would suggest is allowing Windows to try and find the driver itself.

To do this go to the device manager, click on the plus sign next to the items with the exclamation marks, select the device and then delete it. I suggest you do each one individually. Reboot between deletions and on each reboot Windows should tell you it has found new hardware. It will then search for a driver - if you have a driver disck put it in the PC at this point. Hopefully the exclamation marks will then disappear.

I'm a little surprised that the keyboard needs a driver but the display adapter and USB controllers definitely need drivers to work under Win98.

If Windows can't find the driver and you don't have a driver disk for the hardware in question then a bit more detective work is required. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. ;)

Removed USB 2.0...24CD. Reset. It appeared to load the driver when rebooted. But still shows up with yellow exclamation point.

Tried to remove Intel Graphics Controller. System froze before I could click Okay to remove.
