16 colors

First , I'm a mac guy but I have a basic understanding of hardware. So, I volunteered to rejuvenate my sister's old packard bell p2 with a 350 mhz processor, 64 mg of ram and 6 gig hd. I erased the drive and installed a fresh OS ( win 98 SE) and restarted only to find that I can't get out of 16 colors or 640x 480 with either of 2 16 inch crt monitors that work perfectly fine with other computers. I have gone into the control panel-settings-display etc. I thought that meant that I had a bad video card, so I replaced it with another 8 mg rage pro which is recognized and is functioning but at 16 colors and 640x 480. Is there another step? Is there another problem it could be? Pleae advise.

 

Try updating the driver for the card. That's probably all it is.

Dear HD, thanks for the reply. I schould have added in my initial report that the old card was giving the same result ( 16 colors, 640x480). Do you mean that there could be new drivers at the microsoft website for win 98se?
The new card was recognized and the driver loaded by windows at start-up when I put it in.

I believe that HD was trying to tell you that the video card driver isn't installed, and that you need to install the correct driver from the link that was provided. Microsoft doesn't provide the drivers.
