I have assembled a PC and I have a problem....

    I have a Intel Pentium D 3.0GHZ Dual Core Motherboard Combo w/ PCI-Express, a Maxtor Diamondmax 16 300GB 7200RPM 16MB Buffer IDE Hard Drive, and a Memorex Black and Silver 52x CDRW 16x DVD Combo Drive. There is one IDE spot on the Motherboard and I was wondering as where to go from here. ^_^;;

What should I do? Are the IDE to SATA things a good move? Could I run the CD-Rom on the one IDE cable running to the HD and Motherboard?

Here's the whole list of what I orderd any other tips, pointers, or suggestions are very very welcome... Thanks to everyone in advance.

you could run both the hard drive and the cd drive on one cable, that would work out just fine, just make sure to set the master/slave jumpers correctly

you could also try a ide to sata converter, although i have had no experience with them...

Its very unusual for even new motherboards to only have one IDE channel. Because you chose not to tell us the motherboard manufacturer and model number theres no way to confirm thats the case. It would appear the mobo is setup for using sata hard drives only which then leaves the one ide slot open for two rom devices. Could you use the maxtor ide to expand another system and buy a sata drive for this one? I say that because your only expansion capabilities at this time are adding something sata. Put the hard drives jumper on master and the cd-rw (not dvd-rw?) on slave, attach the hard drive to the terminal end of the ide ribbon and the rw drive in the middle. I can't believe you are using a cd-rw instead of a dvd-rw.

Here's a link to the Motherboard so you can see the specs...

(And I'll eventually get a DVD-rw later. I was just wanting to get all the pieces together cheap.)

    Hello

If you need more than 2 ide channels, you could add a pci ide card in one of the slots ( if any are free )

    These are usually inexpensive

Well there you go, 1 IDE port supports 2 IDE devices. But they have a floppy connector where they could have added a second IDE connector instead, go figure. This board is indended to have sata hard drives of the 3.0 type I suppose. Again, if you have another machine you can use the Maxtor IDE on then just get a Sata drive for this board and maybe a dvd burner for the other IDE connector. That way all your hard drives end up on the sata side and your rom drives on IDE.

I can't find them, but I at one time I had a couple of SATA to IDE adapters. They worked just fine, even ran 2 IDE drives in a RAID. That might be an option, or you could pick up a cheap SATA hard drive.

I wish they would put 2 IDE plugs on the motherboards, IDE is not dead yet...

Thanks guys. I just have to find a IDE cable long enough to reach the cd-rom. The grey had to be the cd-rom (or slave) correct?

Also on a side note... it didn't come with and thermal coolant stuff. The white paste you use between the cpu and the cpu fan. It does however have a grey circle of something on it. Is that some sort of coolant? Meaning I don't need more? Thanks again.

Are you talking about the Intel stock cooler? I believe they ship with a thermal application on the heatsink, not 100% on that on yours. If I were you, I would clean it off and use Artic Silver. Follow the instructions at AS's website, or your CPU install manual and you should be fine.

    AS5 installation instructions: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appinstruct/as5/ins_as5_singlecore_expsd.pdf

Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Thats another problem with only one ide and two devices to go to it, the rom has to be slaved and connected to the middle of the ribbon. Getting one long enough to go all the way to the top with the middle connector then back down to the hard drive will take one of those round type ide connections that come in three lengths, 18", 24" and 36" I believe. I have a set and the long one has pulled me out of a few spots already.

    Have a look here:

    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=317&name=Cables-Round

I just scrounged up my 24" cable and if it helps you to decide, the distance between the end and middle connections is 8", and just under 16" from the mobo connector to the middle. My 36" is in one of my systems somewhere and its distances will be even greater. As long as you make sure they're 80 wire (40 wire is the old pre win98 type) you should be ok but the customer reviews seem to cater to the thermaltake brand.
