I asked this in my intro, but was asked to move it here so here it is.

1st Q. I installed two 1TB seagate SATAII harddrives and when I loaded OS (Vista ultimate 64) it asked me where I wanted it loaded in the zero or the one drive, I said zero but it came back with an error message,
about not being partitioned or already being partitioned and then loaded. I don't know which one it loaded into and m not sure how to figure this out. But the one thing I have a problem with is that when I go to my computer I can only see a C: drive which has about 30GB on it now. When I go to system manager device it shows me two drives both the same #'s but when I outline and look at properties one says it is 1/0/1/0 the other is 0/0/0/0, I was told to partion the second drive but I am not sure how to do that either, and thought that you should be able to see it from having first drive partitioned. I know the drive is working cause i can hear it pwr up when comp is turned on, I know the data cable works, swapped it with the other drive. And when I disconnect data and pwr and check sys mngr I see only the drive that is 1/0/1/0 so am pretty sure it is there and working. On the old IDE drives all you had to do was install with connectors and pwr and then put anything you wanted into the drive...no partition. I hope someone out there is vista 64 smart, and this makes sense, and you can help. I was pretty good with XP pro on an HP Pavilion I bought six yrs ago and did some upgrades on but this Vista 64 with all the other stuff I got to go with it to give me what I wanted with room for expansion sometimes baffles my thick slow witted head.... Thanks in advance.

Umm, did you format the second drive yet?

The easiest way to figure out which drive is which is to shut down, remove the power cord from the PC, open it up and disconnect the drive on the 2nd SATA connector (it may be labeled SATA1 or SATA2). Remove the data cable and power cable. Then power up. If the system boots to Vista, then you know which drive is which. If it doesn't, reverse the process and hook up the other drive to SATA0 (or SATA1 as needed) and boot up. If neither drive boots to Vista, then you may have inadvertently set up a RAID system where both drives are needed to boot to the desktop.

Keep us posted, and Welcome to Major Geeks! :wave :major

OK, I guess I didn't make this clear enough...I have two drives. One drieve has the OS etc on it works fine. This is the drive I can see in my computer that sayd drive C: The other drive I have no idea about except I know it pwrs up cause I can hear the disk motor. I don't know if it is formated or not, I don't know how to do that if it is not. I am pretty sure I did not make these raid drives...but if I did, how do i find that out and change? I want to use full capacity and capabilities of both drives. I don't remember ever partitioning IDE drives. But then again all IDE drives I ever used were second hand and maybe had already been partitioned.
I really need a quick answer on this before newegg return runs out.
Thanks again for the already quick answers, but they didn't help much.

Are the jumpers in the back of the drives correctly positioned! As in Master for the first one on the end of the ribbon cable and Slave for the second one connected to the middle connector?

Augiedoggie... These are SATA II drives no ribbon cables, just data and power. look like this end on view: -----] = pwr
[--- =data just ignore the top half of that end block. they look like 7's or L's sideways. no jumpers. board doesn't even have bios jumpers is a Biostar has push button to reset.

Oh geez man, I'm sorry. I thought I saw IDE in your post. That's what I get for skimming posts.:-o Have you tried different SATA slots on your mobo? I had problems with a not too secure SATA connection on the mobo. Is it a good solid fit on both ends? Change cables as I have nothing else to offer. Sorry.

EDIT, what does disk management say? Post a screenshot if you can.

EDIT 2: Ignore change cables as I just saw that you did in first post.

Auggiedoggie, by disk manager do you mean device manager? If not I don't know what disk manager in Vista 64 is... device manage says both drives are there. If I am suppsoed to format the one I can't see on My computer, how is that done under Vista? I'm so confused....lol
This is really begining to bug me.
    Steve

Pstried diferent slots swapped cables...double checked tightness, made sure cables were clean all connections clean, done everything I can think of, both my computer experts I usually call have no idea as niether of them use SATAII or vista 64...its all geek ...opps I mean greek to me.

the drive that does work,,, works on all slots and with all cables... its got to be either a format or a bad drive...I don't know how to format this sucker...

No, Control Panel/System and Maintenance/Administrative Tools/double click Computer Management/Double click Storage. Your new drive should show there. If it's not formatted then there will be a black bar above and saying it's unallocated. Right-click the the drive and format if possible.

Auggiedoggie...!!!!!THANK YOU!!!! Bingo that did it, the damned thing was not formated. I can't believe that when I installed the OS it didn't find and format this. Must be a wonderful Vista thing. That was a bit of a pain to follow but I persisted and finally figured out what to click and double click etc. Auggie you are my main man...KUDOS yea!!! yippee...:celebrate:highfive:dood:tas:dancer:hyper:clap

Great now on to my next wonderful question Which maybe more software..but still involves hardware...lol but this one isn't any rush on... Now my whole brand new computer is up and running workin' like a charm... now I can start learnin' how to overclock every thing...

    Major geeks rocks.

Hahahaha! I'm sure you won't forget where 'Disk Management' is now eh?!:-D BTW, it's not just a 'Vista' thing as it's also an XP thing and before that too. You just never had the need to do it is all.

I will give you a bit of advice on overclocking, read, read and read some more before you blow up your machine!:eek

I know your level of expertise now, just be darn careful and you won't see me in your overclocking threads.:) Glad you got it going.:cool

Auggiedoggie...you can bet your bippie I won't forget. I won't be overclocking anything soon, I intend to do lots and lots of reading first. I have barely scratched the surface on what this new computer is capable of, 8GB ram 2 TB hd, 3Ghz Processor with quad core, Vista 64, A great graphics board with 1 GB onboard, a SB sound card, hook up to all my ancient stereo, hooked up so I can record to dvd/blue ray, record sound and video, play some interesting new games, use my word processor, maybe get into some software programing...I have never in the whole time in dealing with computers ever had to install and partiton a hard drive... wow that is really weird...have taken hard drives apart, put them back together, learned a lot of shortcuts...but I am always learning something new... this is my new thing for today...thanks again very very much, saved me a bunch of headaches.

Well, you got more horsepower than I do man. Is it an i7 CPU and a 285GTX or so? Just curious.;) I have a Q6600 with a GTX260-216. More power to ya man!

(Some MG folding member will have to recruit Steve.;)) If not then I will try!:p:-D

I didn't think that was too bad for my first home built machine. I did a lot of research before buying... found everything here at Newegg both because it was recommend to me by someone I trusted, plus I got everything from one company, plus It was about the cheapest all in all compared to everywhere else I looked including E-Bay..and on Ebay you not always sure of from whom you are buying. I am so far very happy with NE they ship fast, everything arrived safe/ intact...I had to order a couple of extra SATA cables due to things being OEM but that was ok. Know any good software that will work with Roxio VHS to DVD Usb A/D converter? So far Roxio software is the pits...I can't get it to do anything but then I haven't played with it much either as getting this all up and running was first priority.

Excellent rig there Steve! As far as Roxio is concerned...:puke Post what you just said in software about VHS to DVD Usb A/D converter? I have no idea but there's lots of folks around that might know.

Since your initial problem has been solved, start a new thread. It's always best to keep one issue per thread, this way everyone's on the same page.;)

I just noticed this at the bottom??? Whats a folding member?
I have seen that somewhere before...just recently too... isn't that to do with research on enzymes or something? I'm no rocket scientist by any means...got lots of hands on experience with electronics, some hydraulics, some animatronics, putting up and tearing down every sort of antenna from long wire to 28' parabolic..took a course on radio propagation, know a little bit about satellite comm. know a little kryptology, know some carpentry, some electrical work, some plumbing, I can cook, I fish, I even do dishes and windows...someday I'll make someone a great wife...hmm wait a minute. :-D (Except nobody would take me, old, scarred, battered, poor health, can't see, can't hear, can't breathe, Arther is not my friend, niether is that Betes feller, got chronic pain and the list goes on...)

Hehehe, you have tons of spare cycles to donate, here's MG's folding forum. It's all for cancer research etc., I fold for another team but that's OK, all the results go back to the same place.:) If you're interested and don't know where to start then post there and someone will help you. I do this 24/7 on two machines, you might not be able to. Take a look.:)
