2 Adminstrator, 2 All Users in Windows 2000 Pro

I have AMD K7 500 Mhz computer. The hard drive had Win 98, then I upgraded to Win 2000 Pro on a P2 before switching the hard drive back to the AMD motherboard.

The problem is when I reinstalled Win 2000 Pro after switching the hard drive back to the AMD, I probably should of done a repair instead of install. I've upgraded IE6 with SP1. When I'm using IE, it will crash at times and restart. I've also tried to install AVG Antivirus and I get to the point where it is looking for the “files package file” and I don't know where it is. In the Documents and settings folder, there are 2 administrator directories and 2 all users directories, one just says administrator and the other one followed by name and computer ID, same with all users, but only 1 Winnt directory under C. I've deleted the inactive administrator directory. It sees the ethernet card but it doesn't work, there is power going there because when booting up it flashes green momentarily.

I'm not comfortable with the recovery console and don't know what to do once I'm in there. The Win 2000 Pro CD is an upgrade CD and must either detect a Win 2000 Pro or earlier version of windows to install. I don't mind reinstall if it fixes the problem. I've tried the fast repair and does not fix the problem.

As far as I know, there is only 1 partition on the hard drive. When prompted in Win 2000 Pro Setup, should I delete the partition and will it reinstall a fresh copy? When I reinstalled, I did not delete the partition thinking if I do that it will not detect Win 2000 pro and I won't be able to install system on there.

 

You can only repair the windows so many times. It won't be as clean as a clean install. Back up your files, wipe out the os drive, install windows. From 98 to 2000 if you have to.
