My PC came with Windows XP/IE, but now I’ve d/l and installed Firefox/2.0.0.12.

I’m a genealogist and visit the same websites numerous times, so I have Shortcuts on my Desktop for these websites. I wish to continue using Internet Explorer for these.

The problem is: Whenever I click on one of my Desktop Shortcuts, Mozilla Firefox opens the program.

What I want: I would like a program or 'how to' instructions so I can choose/tell Internet Explorer and Firefox which programs they should and should not open.

    What I’ve done:
In IE, I opened Internet Options, Programs and put a Check in the box for: IE should check to see whether it is the default browser.
In Firefox, under System Defaults, I have NO check mark in the box for: Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup.

What I need: Your help, please!
    Thank you!

Is there a reason you want to continue using IE? Some sites don't work so well with Firefox and maybe this is your reason for your geneaology sites perhaps....

Did you know you can have an IE Tab add-on within Firefox so you can "force" certain website to open in IE while within the Firefox application? You can set which programs open in the IE tab. This might be your work around.

You can download the add-on from here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

Then once download and installed in Firefox, click the Tools menu>Add ons and then click on the IE Tab to reveal the Options button. From the pop up window that appears set the Sites Filter tab to contain the sites you wish to open in the IE Tab.

    Hi Lev,

No, I didn’t know that add-on option was available but I’ll certainly take advantage of it. Thank you for the suggestion!

The reason I wish to continue using IE for all my genealogy sites is because I Know they are safe; plus I don’t want my cookies cleared for those sites.
I’m using Firefox for general Internet browsing and have it set to ’clear’ personal data, cookies, etc when I close it.

Utoh: Program says it works with: Firefox: 3.0b3 – 3.0b5pre
Is that the same as my Firefox/2.0.0.12 ?

    Appreciate your help!

Also, if you have all your geneaology sites bookmarked in a folder within Firefox, when you want to open them instead of clicking directly on the bookmark, right clikc on it and choose "Open in Ext. App".

This will open it in Internet Explorer, which means you will be not clearing those cookies when you close Firefox.

No it isn't the same. Version 3 is a beta.

I have IE Tab 1.3.3.20070528, which is made to work with Version 2 of Firefox. I have no idea why they have removed it so V2.0 users cannot download it anymore. You could still try it and see. If you drop IE Tab and the version number in to google you will get plenty of alternative sites from which you can download it.

    Use this addon

I have FF set to not clear cookies but I have cookie culler set to delete unprotected cookies everytime FF is started. I look over my cookies, in cookie culler, and protect the ones for sites I want to log into automatically.
I put an icon, cookie culler supplies a choc. chip cookie icon, on my menu. I can click that at any time to protect, unprotect or clear certain cookies.
