This might be "DUH" for some of you, but if I am on on computer A, can access files on computer B?
    TIA

Both computers would have to have a network interface (most built in the last eight years have a network adapter built in). In the absence of a router, hub, or switch you would need what is called a "cross-over" cable to connect the two - but yes, then both computers could access each other.

    Depends.
Do you have a home network set up?

The easiest way, without a home network is either connecting by a crossover cable as Spad mentioned or a special USB cable.

    I have this adapter: http://www.cyberguys.com/product-details/?productid=10380
you plug it on one end of an ethernet cable and it turns into a crossover cable. That way, I can use any length ethernet I want to have a long or short crossover cable.
