    here is my problem (i think):

    My computer crashed and I took to shop to get fix. apparently instead of fixing they installed another OS. In my program files I now have win and win2. For a while it worked great!! BUT then I had a serious virus/malware problem and cleaned them all off. well I now think that it is reading between the 2 files. I was wondering if someone could walk me thru removing one of the OS systems??

    thanks

    When you boot up are you given a choice of which operating system to boot to?

    Go to start / run / and type:
    msconfig
    Check the boot tab to see if you have more than one.

    it reads:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=2
    default=multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\windows
    [operating system]
    c:\cmdcons\bootsect.dat="microsoft windows recovery console"/cmdcons
    multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\windows="microsoft windows xp professional/fastdetect

    Ok, that is fine. Tell us exactly what problems you have. ( You may need to compare what is listed in win and win2).

    One option would be to save all your personal data and files and just wipe the system and do a total reformat and clean install.

    1. well i'm having a hard time downloading updates for one. in the add/removal program i have NO microsoft stuff, i.e. net framwork, etc, but when i go to program files i can see all the stuff that microsoft has downloaded over the years.

    2. all though i can connect to the internet i am constantly getting closed out (send microsoft a report) or the screen freezes.

    3. i can't open some sites (activex) which i can't download.

    4. and its very very slow loading pages (like dial up slow)

    And you paid someone to create this mess? Maybe you need to return it to them and have them do it right!!

    Otherwise I would really consider doing a clean install to get everything working correctly again.

    yes i did!! although to be fair it worked fine until i had the mass virsus/malware. so it could be my fault, BUT i didn't know the guy left the old system on until the virsus so it may be too late (a lil over a year) to take back. But what is a clean install?? this computer came already pre loaded, so i have no install disks.

    Crapola!! Do you have a recovery partition? The use of it would set it back to factory settings so you would still have to save your personal info and data files. When you boot up, are you given a choice to boot into a restore partition?

    No i'm not. So it would probably be best to take back to repair person (another one), huh? i really appreciate your help. one more question is there some where to get the install disks? thats not to expensive?

    what model is your computer?

    some manufacturors have a factory rest in the computer... for example i have an acer standard m1100 and i can press f8 i think or one of them and it will take me give me the option to restore to factory settings...

    if you are going to do it this way make sure to back-up personnal data...

    i am not sure as to which one it is but for a HP desktop i believe to factory rewet it is the F9 or F12 button.

    ! bfore doing this make sure you have backed up the files you wish to keep !

    restart you computer
    when it gives you the option to go to bios
    hit either F12 or F9 repetitivly
    ot should take you to the factory restore

    if it does not try to do this with the other F keys.

    one of them should work.

    if successful please post which key you pressed

    if not please repost
