2 OS on 1 HD

Hi and Hello to you all,
I've read tons from your site and was referred by a friend of mine. She thought you guys could answer this pretty quickly..Anyway, Here goes. I am on a computer (not mine) which has 2 OS on it. Win2000 Pro and WinXP Pro,SP2...He wants to keep the WinXP and I'm thinking it would sure free up a ton of space if we could delete or uninstall the Win2000.
This computer is an old Compaq PC X2.0...64mb Ram...600MGH amd athlon...with only 256 sdram memory...(Aida32 reports 3 slots for memory, but in actuality there exists only 2 slots)??? So My first question is this...How do I go in to and actually uninstall (or can it be done) Win2000 without damaging the WinXP? 2nd, His only use for this computer is email, surfing and some games... Sometimes his games stutter..or slow...will deleting the Win2000 help? I think I have tweaked as much as possible on this machine, and since this is all it is used for I don't think a new one is necessary...until he gets more games that require more advance tech. Thanks for taking the time to help me figure this one out if you can.

How you go about removing one OS depends a lot on how the dual boot is set up. Are both OS's installed on the same partition and hard drive or are the OS's installed on different partitions on the same hard drive or are they installed on seperate hard drives?

The best way to know the answer to that question would be to do this:

Start -> Run

notepad c:\boot.ini

OK

copy the boot.ini and paste it into your reply.


That will give me a better idea what you are dealing with.

P.S. what does that "NoExecute=OptIn" mean?

 

If they are both on the same partition that will be an easy fix. Post a copy of the boot.ini and I can tell for sure if that is the case. If they are both on the same partition, then it is a simple matter of changing the boot.ini.

 

Boot.ini needs to look like this:

[boot loader]

Save this to floppy as boot.ini

/NoExecute=OptIn (enables DEP for Windows system files) If your friend doesn't have an AMD Athalon XP then you can remove that entry.

Do the following:

1. Configure the computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For information about how to do this, see your computer documentation, or contact your computer manufacturer.

2. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

3. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.

4. When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console.

5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you have to use from the Recovery Console.

6. When you are prompted, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.

7. Type the following command, pressing ENTER after you type the command:

attrib -r -h –s c:\boot.ini
copy a:\boot.ini c:\
attrib +r +h +s c:\boot.ini
​

8. Type exit, and then press ENTER. The computer restarts.

When you are booted into XP open windows explorer navigate to C:\WINNT <---- Delete the entire directory

 

Okay doke, I am copying your instructions now, and will begin in the morning when I am fresh...and with clear brain...thanks so much for the help...and I will post tomorrow after cleaning this up..By the way...you think it will gain any speed after this? or just clean it up so there are no hang ups?...anyhoo, thanks again and see ya tomorrow!

 

Removing 2000 will reclaim some of the HDD, but not enough to effect system performance all that much. Could you post the system summary report from AIDA32. It will give me a better idea of the system hardware.

Increasing the system RAM to 512Mb will do the most for increasing system performance. Other than that defrag the drive, ran a good registry cleaner, and routine scans for malware, spyware and viruses to keep the system clean of those nasties.

 

That I can do... 2 sticks? PC2700 256k?
There are only 2 slots (weird) and Aida reports 3. Of course you see I have PC100 128k in both at the moment. I was under the impression for some reason that this machine was upgradeable (memory) to 356. I would L..O..V..E to boost this thing!
My puter is newer, 2.6Gh and 512 Mem. Thanks for that. and will do the other in the A.M.

 

If you know the model number you can go to www.crucial.com and find memory that is compatible with that specific system.
