I have Windows XP. I had never set a password (don't yell at me!!). After reading security threads, I realize that I need it. Is there a way that Windows XP can memorize your password so that when I hit the boot button I can bypass the Login window?

My 2nd question is about Firewalls. SP2 VS Norton's Firewall. Is there a clear winner so I can set my computer once and for all?

    Thank you! Stephanie :p

Obviously you have seen the light and need a Password for your PC, why would you even contemplate bypassing it?

Lay off XP-2 firewall and use Norton instead. Bettter yet use Zone Alarm or Sygate, I think both block application accessing the net in the free version.

Hi Stephanie, granted a password is usefull when your PC is in a multi user enviroment ( stops anyone messing with settings etc etc ) or if you want no-one using your PC, but if its only you using it then using one is not worth the hassle.

but onto your question, YES you can bypass the logon by using MS Powertoys for XP ( the TweakUI module ) http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=710

once installed it will allow you to tweak many settings within XP and repair some common problems... to auto logon, click the + next to logon and choose Autologon

as for the Firewall.... dont use XPs built in one as the ones MamboSepian posted are much better at protecting you from both incomming attacks and blocking outgoing applications from accessing the net without your express permission ( this feature is good for blocking any rogue trojan or app from sending data back to its master )

Thank you so much MamboSepian and Halo. I'm the only one using my computer, so I don't have concerns about people accessing it. I thought the password was for hackers - not for other users on my computer. And I will check out those firewalls :)
