2 users behind same router playing in same game room?

Equipment: Westell Wirespeed DSL modem, D-Link DI-704 Router (original), two WinXP Home SP2 computers. Both are running seperate game CD's.

I've been fighting this problem for months and no one can seem to help me. I sure hope some one here has an answer. My son and I want to play MechWarrior on the MS Game Zone at the same time, in the same game room, as team members. At the current time we can play individually on the Zone. We can even both get on the Zone at the same time and even get into the same game room lobby but when the game is launched, only one of us can get into the room and the other is returned to the lobby and can't get back into the game.

I have tried using DXport to assign different ports to each computer but that didn't help. There was also a suggestion that I should "forward" certain port ranges to each computer. The problem is that with the DI704 it doesn't seem to allow port ranges. It will only allow you to put in a single port at a time. (See screenshot attached). As I understand it Virtual Server = Port Forwarding and Special Appications = Triggers. I understand that the ports that are supposed to be "forwarded" are: I've attached a screen shot. If anyone can help I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks. Mack

Hmm, tricky one. Make sure you've got the latest firmware on the router.

I'll think about it... tricky one....

Sure they dont block 'lan' players? Some gaming server don't like when 2 people are on a lan together, because of the cheat factor... just an idea...

Well thats not really the point.

Even if "Lan" players were allowed, the fact they both have the same IP address would cause problems. How would the server know which PC on the one IP address it should be sending data to? If you ran the game on two different port-ranges you could potentially solve the problem, but apparently this didn't work here.

As of your screenshot you are forwarding the three virtual server ports to nowhere because under your Miscellaneous items you have not enabled your DMZ host. Unless you really have 99 users on your lan . (I am not advocating doing that but just letting you know.) I ran into the same problem a while back with BF1942, I ended up having to set-up more than one trigger port to get it to work. Try setting up a trigger port higher, say 47625 along with the one you have. You might try one lower as well. Not sure it will work for you but it is worth a shot.

Actually the three ports listed under "Virtual Ports" were for Team Speak. I have had other players tell me that they can play several players behind a router in MW4. They are using different routers then mine though.

I only have two computers connected to my router. I have tried using DXport to have PC#1 use 2302-2311 and PC#2 use 2312-2321. The one think I can't do is "forward" a range of ports since the DI=704 will only allow a single port to be entered in the "Virtual Server" Server Port area. (see screenshot). (PS: As I understand it these ports have to also be "forwarded" to the NAT device (Router). These ports are: PC#1: 2302-2311 and PC#2: 2212-2321 . Since I can't forward a "range of ports" like 2302-2311, I'm trying to figure out a workaround.

Does anyone have any ideas on what Ports I can put in the "Server Port" area that might accomplish the same task?

As a last resort.... Can someone recommend a router that they know will be able to be configured to allow two players behind the same router to play in the same game room?

Thanks guys for all your help. Mack

Here's the screenshot of what I did using MachGeek's suggestion. Did I do it right?

Well my son and I both play games online, connected to the SAME servers, thru the SAME router, ect ... and have NO problems.. so what's your point? We dont port forward, or nothing... only sometimes the admins see we have the same ip and label us 'lan players'... because one of us can tell the other were the enemies are, ect...

You and your son are using 2 different IDs/user acounnts ..whatever???

    FooGoo,

Tell me what kind of router you use and how you have it set up. If it works the way you say it does, I'll go right out and buy it. Mack

As for your questions: We are on two different PC's using WinXPHome SP2, going through the same router, using two different sets of game CD's, using different User Accounts and ID's. The game we are trying to play is MechWarrior Mercs and we play on the MS Game Zone.

Dude, I have a cisco 675 with my DSL.. and I have never changed any configuration, now my service provider may have set something but I doubt it. I have a Linksys wireless router & a linksys hub (just so I can get more machines online) and I have never 'editied' any setting there either.. except for putting a server in the dmz... but that has nothing to do with your problem.
I did a little looking around so look at these..
