I have an acer amd box with 24 pin connection on the mobo but my 450W power supply has a 20 pin connection. local store says go ahead use 20 pin as it does fit and everything will be fine. I am sceptical that it will work has anyone else had experience with this issue.

I have successfully used a 20pin power supply with a 24pin motherboard without any negative issues, but I don't really recommend it. Yes, it will work, and you may never experience any issues, but the other 4 pins are there for a reason, and if you really start putting a heavy load on the PC, you may experience some instability and crashing. Adapters are available that will work, and I have also used these without any ill effects, but some people claim that the adapters are actually worse than just leaving the 4 pins unconnected. I don't agree with that, or see how it makes sense, but that's what I've heard. The best solution is to purchase a new 24pin power supply.
