I just purchased a used Compaq 239116-001 mobo p3 1gig to use as an upgrade.
When I went to install it in my case I found the new MB has a 24 pin connector for the power supply and my case has a 20 pin 250w ATX power supply. Can I use this power supply with this board?
    Thanks

On a purely informative note, 24-pin P1 connectors are almost exclusively used on server motherboards.

Thanks for the information.....but now I am wondering the difference of a server motherboard and can it be used as a desktop pc?

Well, the 24-pin is the WTX (high-end workstation) or EPS (servers... only Xeon's AFAIK) standard. I'm not sure of the difference between those two... but I do know that if your motherboard is a dual CPU motherboard that you should strongly consider buying an actual EPS or WTX power supply. It is important to know if you have WTX or EPS because they've got different pinouts.

Apparantly, EPS is newer and compatible with ATX, whereas WTX is not compatible with either.

Hi there. Just curious.....but you may need another pin connector for your mobo in addition to the 24 pin.

    This taken from MaximumPC
You may need a different power supply unit?
Is there another connector on your board for this?
    Best of luck to you.

No luck, bought the adapter cable plugged it in, turned it on and MB smoked instantly.
    Oh well.

    Well that sucks.

As a ide note, people should be aware the 24-pin P1 connectors are in all our futures. The new 915 and 925X Intel chipsets all have 24-pin P1 connectors. I'm not sure if it is the same as EPS (I would assume so).
