Hi, (I made this post originally in the "networking" section, but nobody had the guts to reply/comment :D)

About half a year ago a really smart guy, John Papandriopoulos, developed a new algorithm that could speed up DSL connection to 250Mbps :major. Now, this was about half a year ago, and since then I haven't heard anything new about it. When are people gonna pick up on this and use his technology. Apparently it only takes a new modem and some tweaking of the operating system.

Anyone know anything more about this???

New theories and tech at times have a long lead in time from conception to reality and this approach will need a big telecoms company to take it onboard, the negotiations in themselfs could take years.

Maybe some firmware updates on certain modems to make them compatible with this new tech, but as he sited above, likely new hardware required and no magical software fix, the OS should not need any updates, if using a ethernet modem like most DSL, their are no drivers needed apart from the network drivers and at present we have gigabit speeds on those, even on home PC motherboards, so should be enough to cope with 250mbps traffic.

Would be nice fo this tech to become reality, especially as we are all craving more speed to complete tasks in this ever growing multimedia age, TV and Gaming will be revolutionised with speeds like VDSL2, but dont hold out hopes of it happening overnight.

If you want high speeds now, then South Korea and Japan are the places to be with respective speeds of 49mbps and 63mbps as per this info I blogged about yesterday http://www.itif.org/files/2008BBRankings.pdf from this page http://www.itif.org/index.php?id=142

    thanks halo,

I moved from holland to australia about 2 years ago.. since that time we have had to limit ourselves to a crappy 1500/256kbps plan. Now they put in ADSL2+, but because we're around 3km from the exchange we'll probably only get 6mbps max.. crappy aussie broadband. Now they're talkin about fttn, which will take a couple of years.

Damn technology. There is probably so much advanced technology out there that is not available to people like us.

Fine for smaller countries, but for big continents (and countries) such as Australia, Africa and America it will remain a pipe dream for many years.

I used to live in, what was then, the third largest town in the NT and it was 500 miles (800 K's) to the next town and (then) it took days (sometimes 7 days) to get there. Imagine how that town would rate on a Government's priority to get 250Mbps to them. Bazza

The UK is a small country and inventor of many aspects of the web, for a technological country, max retail home BB for us us ADSL2+ @ 24mb tops! the infastructure needs updating to get un into the relms of Japan and Sth Korea.

Yes large countries such as Australia this maybe a distant dream, due to your remotness in some areas, cities should not be an issue though.

Is that 24 MB/s or 24 mbps or (as I am on) 24576kbps? Wished "they" had more thought in expressing speeds. :D

Capital cities may not be such as issue, but "cities" are certainly still an issue for Broadband here in OZ. Bazza
