OK well this is the second round this thread will do.

Im running XP, SP2, Media Player 10 and Quicktime 7. When ever I play a movie file with Media Player or Quicktime (from CD, Hardrive and streaming) the computer will freeze, resulting in a re-start. I have tried uninstalling both and reinstalling both so that doesnt work. A real pain in the ass. But it doesnt happen when i play mp3 files or watch flash movies or even Google Video....

Can someone help me out here? Cheers.

    Sam.

Suggestion .... go to control panel, administrative tools , event viewer and see if there are associated problems with the freeze ... let us know what you find (either under system or applications).

The event log may be helpful, if it was written in time.

    Though, something to try.....

Disconnect from the internet and then try to play a SMALL mpeg file. Does it still freeze? I'm thinking that perhaps that the media players are hunting for codecs to run the files.

    Just a thought.

Yep it still freezes. It freezes when either Mpeg or QT movies are played, streamed and from the HD.

You haven't mentioned anything about what you find in the event logs .... you might also want to put your os cd in the drive, exit it when it starts up , go to start ...run ...type sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc). That will check that all your operating files are original and haven't been changed. Post back.

Try playing the video with the following program and check to see if this also fails:

Click START, then RUN, then type in: mplayer2 (press enter)

@ TimW: About the sfc /scannow procedure, if you have sp2 installed, and you have a sp1 cd, then it will probably copy over an older version of said file. Even if you do have a sp2 cd, it may copy over a file that was previously patched. But typically, the sfc will scan the current cache located on your machine, if said file is not there, then it will use the cd, unless one were to use the sfc /purgecache option. Which would gaurantee checking the cd, instead of the hdd, after an additional sfc /scannow.

IF this works, I'd double check Microsoft/windows updates.

On top of that, you do have ALL MS updates already installed on your machine?

Another thought, have you downloaded and installed any 3rd party codec packs, like K-lite codec pack?

Side note, #105: the SFC command just creeps me out. :)

This exact thing happend to me. Is your computer new? if not you must install your CPU mobo and graphic's card drivers. tell us if it works. if you do not have the drivers you can find what is in your system by downloading this http://majorgeeks.com/PC_Wizard_d3846.html

    Hope it works.

    P.S It's not your codecs.
