    Good Day All -
    Removed an IDE HD from a PC w/power problems. Installed into a 2nd PC. Started using Master/Slave setup, changed bios to auto recognize 2nd drive. HD is recognized in BIOS and in Device Manager, however the drive is not showing in My Computer. Tried a switch from S/M to Cable Select. Once again, Drive is recognized in BIOS correctly and shows in Dev Mgr. Properties in Dev Mgr show it is working properly, however there is no volume label.

    Any thoughts out there?

    Thanks,
    Acktom

    Can you see it in the Disk Management Snap-in ?

    Thanks MC. Not certain what you mean with Disk Management Plug in. I can see the HD in the bios and the Device mgr. Cannot access Volume properties w'in Dev Mgr, but can populate disk info.

    Thx,
    Acktom

    Are you trying to pull data off to the new master drive?

    A hard drive that's not formatted ( or had it file system scrammed ) will show up in Device Manager but may be invisible to Explorer.
    Assuming you're running Win2k\XP try: Start=>Run=>diskmgmt.msc
    This will give a more detailed accounting of the state of the partitions. If any partitions are not healthy you might have to run chkdsk:
    Start=>Run=>chkdsk d: /f ( for d: substitute the correct drive letter of the partition) to check and fix the integrity of the file structure.

    Drive shows healthy in disk management. The drive has not been assigned a drive letter and has no path. Where did I go wrong??? Still can't access the drive thru win explorer. Any thoughts?

    Desperately,

    Again try: Start=>Run=>diskmgmt.msc
    Since the drive is healthy, all it needs now is formatting. Right-click on the bar of your 2nd drive. You'll then select "Format..." on the context menu. The Format Dialog Box pops up for you to apply a Volume label: ( type in something meaningful) and a File system: ( I recommend NTFS ) and then click OK. When the warning box appears click OK. On a large drive, this may take quite a while - so be patient. It must be allowed to complete. Once the drive is formatted, you'll be able to access it.:)
