hi all, i have just installed a new 200gb hard drive on my pc, the problem is it does not show up in control panel,
everest and device manager says it is there and enabled, computer management says it is there but unknown (disk 1) and says it is only 128gb and on-line.
i have a 20gb with my os on (w2kpro), set to master at the end of the primary ide, the 200gb is for storage only and set to slave (? on the hdd it says master-on, slave-off for the jumper settings, so i have no jumper on),
    can anyone help ta

Did you go into the computer's BIOS setup screen and set the 2nd HD to ON or AUTO? With Win2KPro, you may have to do a registry tweak to allow you to access the full 200GB. With XP it was a matter of simply installing a Service Pack.Check the MS Knowledge Base for solution.

I'd hold off writing any data to that drive until I could get the entire 200GB recognized. What you're seeing is called an LBA limitation, and you should be able to easily overcome it, assuming your computer is of recent vinatge and it's not the hardware that's not capable of handling a drive that big. Even so, the drive should have come with some kind of disk manager/drive overlay software that would get you the full 200GB even if the mother board won't on its own.

i bought the drive as is, brand new, but no box or instuctions, from a company that deals in mainly selling computer stuff on the net.
i have an asrock 775vm800 motherboard, 512mb ddr400 (but only recognized as ddr333 in both slots) and celeron 3.2ghz and w2kpro fully up to date

Your computer seems new enough to be able to handle it. If you know the brand of the drive, the manufacturer's website will most likely have the exact solution.

I don't think your mobo is a problem.

    See http://support.microsoft.com/?id=305098

    Note:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.Important Although support for 48-bit LBA is included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and later, it is still necessary to create the registry change that is described in the "Resolution" section of this article.

What I'm getting from this, though, is that even with SP4, you still have to make the change in the registry of the EnableBigLba key.

I believe the correct entry in that field is simply 1.

I guess you deleted the partition you formated and started anew. Glad you got it sorted out.
