    hi everyone,

    I have an spare
    TP-link modem router
    Model TD-W8960N (300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+)

I require advice on how to configure the TP LINK router which will be located in a sleep out > use house wifi and internet router > for internet access in the sleep out.

So to be clear need to config for use, the TP link > wireless connect to the house router > use the house routers wifi and its internet access in the sleep out.

    Scenario:

Our sleep out / granny flat cant get wi-fi, even though its only 20 meters or so away from the router - line of sight.

Relocating the house router / internet access is not an option as it is already at its maximum proximity from the phone jack limited by its phone connection cable length.

    What I've tried so far;

When i was in the middle of the sleep out > I connected the TP link router by ethernet cable to a laptop > I next used the laptop browser to access the TP link router settings.

    Next
I reset the TP link to defaults clearing all data, after that while looking through the TP link settings I managed to find our house wifi name listed with several other neighbors routers.
( ^ note where i was located in the sleep out no laptop or phone we've tried can normally see the house router)

Therefore that means that the TP link router can see the house wifi /and theres hope for the internet access in the sleep out. If i can only configure the TP link in the sleep out to use the house wifi router and get internet access!

So the configuration of the TP LINK in the sleep out, so it can use the house wifi / internet is my issue.

I do have admin access usage rights to the both routers.
The house router does have existing and stable internet and arrived pre-configured setup for that.

At this time i'm stalled pending helpful advice, having found nothing relevant in this sites "how to" section.

All I can do is sit in the middle of the sleep out > use a laptop connected by ethernet cable to the TP link router, using the laptop browser access the TP link settings and see the house wifi routers name and neighbors routers and that's about it.

So I need to configure the TP link as access point? or bridge?? to the house router wifi internet.
Either way I need to configure TP link to connect to the house wifi
Allow other devices to connect to the TP link to use the house internet access.

thanks for help on this one - baffled to many settings.

This is by far the simplest answer - are you certain the cable cannot be extended?

The second most simple solution would be to get a pair of homeplugs, aka powerline adapters. These devices use the house electrical circuits to carry the Ethernet signal, enabling an Ethernet connection to the router from any house mains outlet, though if the granny flat has its own power supply this may not be an option.

The most difficult option is the one you are attempting though I have successfully done it in the past. You need to turn off DHCP in the slave router and ensure its IP address is not the same as that of the main router. The actual steps to achieve this will vary from one router to another.
