Hi, I hope I am posting in the right forum. I have two pc's connected to an interbel DSL modem through a Linksys Router 4 Port Switch. The lst pc has no problem. I cloned the MAC number of 1st PC into the router. The 2nd pc says connection is working fine. I can ping the router IP # 192.168.1.1 but can't seem to ping past the router. The 2nd PC has a D-Link Fast Ethernet Card which I have uninstalled and reinstalled 4 times. I have tried IEFix and Winsock Fix already. I don't understand why the signal from the 2nd PC doesn't go on through the router to the modem like the lst PC does?
I am running XP PRO on both PC's but the 2nd is a very old computer. Also, in order just to ping the router I had to manually put in the IP address in Properties in Network Connection. Otherwise, if I let it be selected automatically it was one that couldn't access anything. In this case, is the IP number being assigned by the D-Link card?Thank you for your help. IceMaiden
lst computer is a Dell, 2nd is an old IBM.

    UPDATE:

I can ping router from 2nd PC but I can't not dial into it like the user's manual says that I should be able to. Thanks

On both computers, are ye using DHCP? As in the router is assigning the IP's to both computers. Can both computers ping eachother?

Does either computer have a firewall?

This question, may be better handled in the networking forum. :) But, I'll (and others) will do our best. :)

Thank you, I wasn't sure which one to post in. The 1st PC can ping the 2nd. The 2nd cannot ping the lst, only the 192.168.1.1 address. I have uninstalled the firewall in the 2nd until this is figured out. The lst has the firewall that I think came with the PC-along with SP2. I have disconnected it once but it didn't seem to help. I am not sure about the DHCP or where to check it. I feel like the ethernet cards on each PC could be assigning the numbers but I don't know enough about it. On the 2nd one that can't reach the internet I know that if I check assign automatically, then it will say host cannot be reached when I try to ping the router so I put in manually, IP: 192.168.1.10
Subnet: 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 I hope this helps.

Well, most routers, if not all, of them. Have built in DHCP services, which dish out IPs to an internal network.

Not sure if you are manually setting IPs to your computers. If you are, make sure you are setting both DHCP and DNS to "automatic".

In addition, once the above is done, please post (as attachments). a copy of:

Click START, then RUN, then type in:

    ipconfig /all > c:\pc1.txt
    notepad c:\pc1.txt
    save as an attachment here

do the same for pc2, labled as pc2.

I'm not sure if I did what you asked before I ran the ipconfig. DHCP is enabled in the router. DNS and IP are set to automatic in pc1. I only tried to set them to manual
in pc2 because I was trying to get it to work or what I thought was manual. That's how it is in this attachment. If you are saying that DHCP should be set to automatic in the computers then I don't know where to do that. If you need to me to change something and run ipconfig / all again I will. Thank you for your patience. icemaiden

    UPDATE
I thought since you hadn't checked back I would run an ipconfig with the 2nd PC set to give the IP address automatically so you would have it to compare with.
    Thanks.:) IceMaiden

The new IP address is an automatic private IP address, which means you are not pulling an IP address from the router. This does not necessarily mean the router is the problem, though.

On the problem PC, open up a command prompt, and type in "ipconfig /release", press enter, then type "ipconfig /renew" (no quotes), and enter again. What, if any, error message do you get when you try to renew the ip address?

Well, that is probably either the router itself, the cable between the router and your computer, or possibly the DHCP client services.

First thing to try: got to start, run, type "services.msc" (no quotes), hit enter. Scroll down to "dhcp client", and doubleclick on it. Make sure the startup type is set to "automatic", and the service is started. Then, try the "release/renew" thing again, and test the internet if it completes.

If that doesn't work: Reboot, tap "F8" while the computer is booting up, choose "safe mode with networking". Log on, see if the internet works in that mode.

If neither of these steps work, you should probably let us know and hopefully someone who knows more about hardware that I do can give you some advice on where to go from here.

No, unfortunately, it didn't work. I did wonder about one thing? Is it possible that a setting for old dial up is somewhere in the computer and overriding the DSL? At first there was a phone line still plugged in and I thought that would be the problem but it didn't help to remove it. At one point also under modems in control panel there was a 2nd modem called something like "cable between two computers". I deleted this but I don't know what it was and if it could have represented a wrong connection somewhere.
Thanks for all your help so far. Ice Maiden:confused:

Hi, I just wanted to be sure I didn't get lost in the shuffle. Was I supposed to transfer the thread to harddrive if last idea didn't work or will someone do that for me?
    Thanks, icemaiden

Sorry, I meant to say hardware forum, not harddrive. I've been working on this too long. One thing I noticed today. After Geck said that my IP address was a private IP address, not one from the router, I went to alternate configuration in Properties of Networking and typed in router gateway, 192.168.1.10 for IP and the same DNS as the lst PC. Now I can ping majorgeeks.com, yahoo.com, and google.com. Before I couldn't. When I go to log on with IE it looks like I am connecting, but eventually waiting for answer times out. Hope this helps someone help me and this pathetic pc. Thanks
