3 problems with my new Fedora install:

Last night I installed Fedora Core on another hard drive (in addition to my other hard drive which has Win XP) and finally figured out the combination to hook the two HDs up so I can dual boot properly. This only took about a day. Linux is a little overwhelming, but I think I'm starting to get it. The most glaring problems at this point are:

    1. I have no sound. I guess this is because my version of Fedora is older than my motherboard and Fedora won't detect the sound hardware. I am using Fedora Core from about 2004 (came with Linux for Dummies 5th edition (c) 2004). My computer is a Compaq Presario with an AMD Sempron 3500+ and onboard sound. I have been looking around the Internet for a Linux sound driver for this thing and it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. I know the onboard sound is compatible with Linux (not windows dependent) because the sound works fine with Knoppix. When I click on detect sound card (or whatever the command is) it says no sound card detected.

    2. I cannot mount my flash drive to transfer downloads from Windows to Linux because the Gnome (or whatever the file manager is called) supports floppies & CD ROM, no mention of flashdrives. I am going to try burning these downloads to a CD-RW to transfer them but this is a pain in the butt. Is another file manager in order?

    3. Every now and then my mouse gets all wonky and goes down to the lower left point on the screen and clicks repeatedly. This opens up all kinds of applications (about 10 or 12 open office windows for example) which tends to bog the system. This is a very intermittent problem which seems to happen only when I move the mouse with the HD running. Does this sound like I need another mouse driver? It's a generic PS/2 mouse that is always detected fine during startup.

Please help quickly because I'm getting ready to yank the Linux hard drive out and put it in the skeet thrower...

I don't know enough about Fedora other than to say update your drivers and the distro...but wouldn't it just be easier to use something like ubuntu?

I would definitaly update your distro, or even go redownload the newest fedora core install and redo it. Most of those should be fixed by a newer installer/setup.

If you think a new install or update would help, I'm willing to try it. The problem is I'm on dialup so it's not at all practical for me to download huge files. I really want my Linux to work though. Are there any of you Linux promoters out there who would be interested in burning me a recent copy of Ubuntu or Fedora? Please email me at LBSammy@gmail.com and I will send you my address. I will pay a reasonable postage charge.

    Thanks for your help.

If you send me a bubble package envelope, stamped with appropriate stamps to cover the cost of a CD or DVD, I'll send you it. Send me a PM if interested.
