    Pentium IIIE 750 mhz
    394 Mb RAM
    XP Pro
In Display/Settings in the 'color quality' window my only options are "High - 24 bit" and "Medium - 16 bit". I'm trying to run a newish PC game (Myst IV Revelations). At game startup I get an error message telling me to reset desktop to 32 bit depth.
How do I reset or upgrade to 32-bit depth?
    TIA

Your video card must be able to support 32-bit depth. What video card do you have in your system.

Integrated video on Intel Easton D815EEA2 Mobo. If an inexpensive video card is not available to add to this system I might as well get a new mobo/cpu bundle.
Thanks for you fast response BTW!

Have you checked the Intel site for updated Drivers

Prior to my original post I updated driver from Intel's site. All other system requirements are sufficient to run this game. I assume 32-bit color depth support is a hardware function and can't be achieved through driver or other software.
(On the learning curve here  )

What is your monitor being detected as?

My monitor is being detected as a Samsung SyncMaster 763mb. I'm not sure I understand your question.

Certain monitor "drivers" won't allow certain color depths and resolutions.

Have you ever been able to display 32 bit color?

What if you lower your resolution?

Already set to lowest resolution. I also have a Dell system which DOES offer a 32-bit color setting. The Dell has a better CPU and graphics adapter but an older monitor.
So back to my original question - what do I need to get 32-bit color depth?
Is it a function of hardware or software?

Both, but if your hardware doesn't support it. It won't be an option for you to select. Since you are using the latest drivers, and it appears windows has detected the monitor correctly, it is the hardware that is not capable of 32-bit. It is either the monitor or the chipset. I would suspect the chipset is not capable of 32-bit.

If it's an Intel 815 chipset, which I think it is going by your motherboard, then it supports 32 bit colour.

If it's not an option then you aren't using the correct driver. It's that simple.

Found this on the Intel site.

    Graphics
Support for 32 bit color depth (32 bpp)

    Solution:
32-bit color is not supported by the Intel® 82810 and 82815 graphics controllers. As a result, a few games that require 32-bit color will not run on the Intel 82810 or 82815 graphics controllers. 32-bit color depth is only supported by the newer Intel® graphics controllers.

    This applies to:
    Intel® 82810 Graphics Controller
    Intel® 82815 Graphics Controller
    Intel® 82830M Graphics Controller
    Intel® 82845G Graphics Controller
    Intel® 82852/82855 Graphics Controller Family
    Intel® 82865G Graphics Controller
    Intel® 82915G/82910GL Express Chipset Family
    Mobile Intel® 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family

Supported Screen Resolutions, Color Depth, and Refresh Rates for the Intel® 82815 Graphics Controller

I have an old Intel Solano motherboard (815 E Intel Extreme graphics) which supported 32 bit.

Anyway, if you have the correct driver and it's not supported then there isn't much you can do apart from upgrading.

Profound thanks, thumbs up, bear hug, and God bless for everyone's input!
I picked up a cheap video card at the recycled PC store for $15. Gonna put it in and 'roll the dice'. I believe there's a BIOS setting to change. Hope it works so I don't overreact and buy $3000 worth of cutting edge goodies and just do a build. ;)

The onboard video should automatically disable itself, with a video card in the AGP slot.
