Hi, I'm looking around at desktop computers in the $600-700 range.. maybe i'll be able to wait to buy until Win 7 comes out so I don't have to reinstall the OS.

But I can't figure out whether I need 32-bt or 64-bit .. no idea about compatibility with my peripherals - printer, external HD's, and various older programs like Office 2003. This is just for home use, no gaming or heavy duty graphics.

    Thanks!
    Karen

    Hi

64bit is the way forward, I find it much quicker than 32 bit, but only when using 64bit apps, Office 2003 will work fine in 64bit as will many other apps, but they are not likely native 64bit, only Office 2010 is or will be 64bit native.

Best to check if your hardware has 64bit drivers but in the main 32bit drivers will work ok, so long as your PC will run Vista OK, it wil likely run Windows 7 fine.... do check with is app http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_7_Upgrade_Advisor_d6076.html

If buying a new PC, make sure its Windows 7 ready then you will be fine, just need to check on your other hardware, like printer for Windows 7 drivers, but Windows Vista drivers will work in 90% of cases ok in Windows 7

Thanks, Halo! So I wouldn't be likely to have problems with my printer or external hard drives?

Thanks, DomLuc - If I find a system with the other specs and price I want, and it happens to be 64-bit, I'm trying to figure out whether that could be more of a problem than an asset.

    Hi karen

That was my concern too about a year ago. I got Vista with 64 bit and have not had one problem with it. I think as far as compatibility, you won't have any issues. :) (that's coming from a far far far less knowledgable tech person than Halo and DomLuc LOL)

    Hi Karen

Printer no if a Vista or Windows 7 driver is available, and as for external HDD, then likely not as the USB mass driver will cover all external USB/Firewire drives from a few years back.

If you find a PC with 4GB ram and 64bit then great you have covered IMHO yourself for future as 64 bit applications are growing in popularity and I for one seek them out always as I now only run Windows 64 bit, be that Vista or more so Windows 7.

    Thanks, Laura!
