This is strange, never encountered this before. Perhaps you have an idea? I already turned it in to Do Not Call. I googled the number and came upon a list of people complaining about the same number. If you try to call it back a recording saying number no longer in service, not until the next hour anyway. rolleyes
The times an actual person came on the line they claimed to be a collection agency. The other posts I noticed after googleing said their caller was offering reduced credit card rates. I'm sure it's a scam of sort but can't pull it together. Any ideas? It's coming from Fl. I think. We get a call from this number at least once a week. Recorded, giving a number to call which also is no longer in service, that ones an 800 #. I haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, Dan is WAY to nice about it. They tell him, we'll remove your number from our list" Dan, "ok" Every Time Hey Dan, think they're lying??

    LoL! k...that made me laugh.

You mentioned when you actually got a real person, they mentioned collection agency. Did they ask for a specific person when you answered the call? If it was a collection agency, they will keep calling you and calling you no matter what you say. We had the same deal...message on the machine saying call this number. When we called they asked for a relative. When we said they didn't live here, they said they'd take our name off the list. They never did. They called at least once a day. I had to actually write a letter to the state attorney generals office, which actually did work.

Hopefully, that's not the case for you guys. They are beyond pests.

I dare a collection agency to call me. If they do, I can have my attorney take legal action and SUE them ;)

Yes they do ask for a name (Dan forgets what it is) that would be somewhat understandable a collection dept not beleiving you but look what I found putting the number in google, I did not submit anything on this page thinking it might be part of the scam. Could you hold on for a min. while I get my tin foil hat? Thanks

Wow. I saw this thread and thought the number looked familiar. So, went back on my caller ID and they called me today. Same message. To be honest, I thought it was for one of my kids, said something about payment not being late, but did they want to see if we wanted to reduce out rat on credit cards. I hung up.
    Thanks for the tip.

At least it sounds like it's not a collection agency.

    Did you report the number?

No way, if nothing else report the number to DNC they are up to something, driving me nuts trying to think of what and how through the phone. It's like they're hacking, what could someone possibly get from your phone? I also believe this is really big. where is my foil hat

Looks like identity theft, they appear to be chasing credit card numbers

There is a post on the page you supplied from 'Jim' 2007-07-25, that appears to have all the info.

Even if my own bank called me (and I was somehow sure it was them ;)), I wouldn't give them my credit card details.
They already have the details and they have other systems in place to verify my identity.

I would have thought with caller ID there would have been some way of blocking a call from connecting to your phone, would be perfect for cold callers.

Actually it sounds exactly like a collection agency. They will go out of the way in not exposing themselves. If they tip their hand then contacting the person they are looking for is less likely.

Try to answer when they call, ask for a supervisor and complain to the supervisor. If not then your number will be re-entered automatically for call back.

You bring up a good point!
And it might be fun to try and put them on the spot, even if you have no intention of giving them information!

It seems to be a programed call with only a recording to listen to. It calls over the week-end When you try to call it back or call the 800 it gives you to call you get that weird sound then a recording saying the number is no longer in service. Now can it go off and on? The difference with the other people is their calls are about a credit card ours have been looking for a woman by a collection agency. It's all very strange. appears to be mass calling too. Yeah Shanemail saw Jim's info. Phone company, now I'm more confused.

Have you gotten a new cell or home phone number recently? Even within the last year or so.
It could be you have a recycled phone number that a lender/collector has on file so that is where they are searching.

Then again after looking around online it looks like a weak scam for information.
They will probably start on a new set of phone numbers soon so hopefully it will stop soon.

This kinda relates, I've been trying to get the 3 tones you get when you get a disconnected number. If you put these 3 tones in front of the answering machine message any smart machine that calls you will log it and, after a while, remove the number from their list.

There is a gadget called the Zapper that does the same thing, fits between your phone and the answering machine.

I had to deal with that at some point earlier this year, some jerk was calling from a collection agency, claiming a bill was sent for work we had done by the phone company. Now, my Phone number is on the exchange of one city, while my street address is for a different city. In any case, he refused to send a paper bill, so we contacted the phone company.

They informed us that it was a complete scam, took the phone number, and we never heard from him again. Score one for Verizon.

I followed the link given by Darlene http://whocalled.us/lookup/3217775032
I read thru what other people had wrote, I got the same call. There are some links there for reporting the number.
I did file a complaint with FCC.
Seems this is going on all over.

The way their going they will probably go to jail. You can't keep doing this indefinately, and they are attracting way too much attention.

Bill,This is the WAV file that you record at the start of your answering machine message, it will cause most Telemarketer's to delete your number from their call list. Most other peeps calling will wait till they hear your message, but best to let Family and friends know. Make certain that your Answering Machine picks up after the second ring, and allow a one second pause after the tone before you record your message. The FCC does not appear to have a problem with this, but I would advise all to check with your Telecom provider. WAV file in Zipped attachment.

Do you put it on your answering machine by playing it from something while holding it close while recording your greeting? confused

  25. BCGray

    BCGray Guest

Yes, that's what I did Darlene, you can also have it on those small digital recorders and have the recorder close to the phone. When you have your answering machine turned off and when the *#@* Marketers phone at dinner time, because the computerized dialers have a wait pause before they play their message; so when you hear that pause when you pick-up you can then play the tone from the recorder. The pause is to determine if the number they dialed is valid and free, the moment you say "Hello" it fires up and gives its spiel. This takes a little practise.......But hey, I don't get any marketers now:D If you have "Call Display" any number you don't know you simply pick-up and play the "Tone" first then wait a second and if you here a voice you can then talk.

No, I didn't, but should have. I was peeling potatoes, and as soon as she started with her message, (recording) I knew it was the same thing and hung up.

These people are probably not even in the USA, Could be using a call forward feature of some sort. Which is why you can't call the number back. Nobody at that number but they are at "some" number somewhere.
Maybe more complex then the crude sounding scam it appears to be. If this number gets shut down they can have a new one operating in minutes. Or they have numbers in reserve waiting to be used.

I spoke to soon, as I was reading your answer heard Dan on the phone sounding upset.
He had just hung up but gave me a phone # and an account # I told him
he would not get anyone if he tried to call back but me and my mouth
    - he got some one then handed me the phone.
I told them they were going to be reported to the DNC and FCC he didn't sound concerned.
Wanted our phone number and the acc # - DUH

Kinda confirms my theory. They are not concerned with US laws because they aren't in the US.
Shutting the number down is maybe the best that can be done by FCC. Then the scammers just crop up a new one to use.
DNC only applies to legitimate companies so that is a dead end complaint.
