    I have XP.
I have used CCleaner and the amount of programs in use is a lot less.
I thought that this might be why the pc comes to a halt like it has run out of memory.
Any ideas what might be causing this.

Could be your computer is slow, low RAM, to many items on your computer for what your computer has, to many items running on your computer, virus/trojan/dirty something slowing it down. Suggestions Maybe give some specs of whats in your computer to begin with.

i have 2 gb of ram.
    I have pctools internet sercurity
and malwarebytes running and show the pc is clean.
    I have followed the guides.
It hasn't happened for a few days, but it would just slow down after a while .
The programs running was nothing special just general use.
    We'll see how it goes.

    Hi

CCleaner in its Startup list menu (Tools > Startup) do us a screenshot and attach the image of the startups you have as we maybe able to slim that startup list a little as many items are useless or can be manually started when needed.

Is Malwarebytes the full version or the free on-demand scanner? as running PCtools and a Resident Malwarebytes could slow your PC a little, to test disable malwarebytes. If you have the Free on-demand version then you're fine, it will not hamper anything.

What seems to be happening is whenever I open a program ( outlook , explorer , etc )it is slow to open.
Also when I open My Videos folder the pc freeze's .
    PC spec's:-
    OS - XP sp3
    CPU - E6300 duo
    Ram - 2GB
    Graphics - Radeon X1950pro

    Hi

Ooops, re-visiting threads and seems I missed yours, sorry, but its best to manage startups with StartupCPL over Ccleaner or msconfig as if you disable an item and then uninstall it, it can be a pain to remove the entry, not impossible and I have instructions in another thread on that, but best not to go that route.

Ctfmon can be removed and here is the Microsoft text on this BUT I find this free app much better and simpler Here

Delete the following ones as they dont do much and will on updates to the apps recreate themselves

    SunJavaUpdateSched
    Adobe Reader Speed Launch

The rest its best to manage with startupCPL.

Are your versions of PCtools and Malwarebytes the retail ones as I would remove or disable Malwarebytes if its the retail background scanning one as that could be the cause of your slowness as running two malware scanners can cause issues and slowness.

    Thanx for the info.
Is it ok to run Malwarebytes if I disable the anti spyware in PCtools ss.

    Hi

I cannot answer that fully as I dont have those applications installed, but I would be tempted to run Malwarebytes manually when needed over disabling PCtools as at times you never really fully disable them.

Try your PC with Malwarebytes disabled and see how it runs.
