3d accelerator on my radeon 9600 xt?

Recently programs, namely The Sims 2, and some 3d demos have not been working and i suspect the problem was my newly installed Radeon 9600 xt graphics card.

The program Everest has a giant x next to the 3d accelerator under graphics options.

I have the updated drivers, so i do not understand the problem. The Sims also said once, "Failed to find any Direct X 9.0c graphics adapters... etc..." and the demos said, "Unable to find an acceptable display adapter."

Please help I am lost in this computer.

 

I have the same exact problem.

Updated drivers to latest CATALYST 5.6.
Updated directx to 9.0c.

Can't play any of my games as they can not detect 3D accelerator.

Even 3D demos that come with the cd cannot work. This error occurs:

Desktop is in full color and system devices states device is installed properly.
Games were working fine before i updated.
