    Hi everyone

Im new to this site and need help.

I want to set up a wireless network at home but not so simple. i have 3g wireless modem and a router with wireless capabilities. i also have 2 laptops with wireless adapters as well. this is what i am trying to accomplish hopefully with the help as the fellow people of this forum.

I want to share my wireless 3g card across all computers. i cant get the other pcs to join the modem so i want to share the internet connection via the router.

in short share internet connection to router then from router to laptops wirelessly.

Is this possible. Im using an SMC router

    thanks

I do believe this is possible, although, I haven't set it up myself yet (at least, not with our 3G wireless modem - I have done internet sharing many times).

Please refer to the Microsoft knowledgebase article, How to configure Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP for instructions on how to share a single internet connection among all the computers on your network. (The steps should be VERY similar if you are using Windows Vista, or Windows 7)

I see one drawback that I should warn you of, though, and that is that the ICS host must be always on and connected. I don't know about yours, but our wireless internet connection has a fairly low bandwidth cap considering the speed, and overage charges are EXPEN$IVE!!

Thanks for the reply. i understand the ICS but i need to no if my task is possible. i have been trying it today with great success at failing. Question for you: the router has a NAT tab. can i take my private addresses and address it to the public address. Or would there be any routing involved in the router itself. Basically my 3g get acts as the dhcp but now i want the router to act as the dhcp sever and my hosts must use the router as a GW to the wireless network. i dont no if im explaning properly but im trying.

just some thoughts that need clarification.

I think I've made some possibly bad assumptions about your modem. I'm drawing from my personal experience; we have a rocketstick (aka 3G modem), but this is designed in such a way that it will only work when connected to a host computer with driver/application software installed, and this is why I suggested ICS. It is quite possible you have a more robust modem, and forgive my assumptions if this is the case. This would be good news, though, as this should work in your configuration.

Perhaps we should start with the modem. Do you have a make and model for the modem? This is typically printed on a sticker on the bottom of the unit. Does the modem have configuration pages that you can access?

I'm starting to suspect that your modem also performs routing functions, and if that is the case, we may need to configure your router to perform the role of a switch. If the modem is performing DHCP and NAT, I think we should let it, rather than trying to get the router (which is downstream of the inet connection) to do them. But again, let's get a make and model to confirm this suspicion instead of operating on assumption. :)

I will send you make and model of the router as soon as i receive it. its at my brothers house. when i last used the router it does have management features like NAT and Routing tables.

basically i want my 2 laptops to have internet access as well but via the wireless network provided by the router. But remember that the router is not directly connected to the internet. i have to use the router as an access point basically to the 3g network

this is the setup thus far. 3g card connected directly to desktop and thats the internet connection. now i have connected the router via lan to the desktop and want to use the wireless features of the router to share the 3g internet connection.

as far as i no the router make is smc barricade N pro router model smc7904wbra-n

is there other way we can communicate faster. thank you for takin the time to help me out

See, this is what is confusing me. To me, it sounds like you want a more typical network setup, where the router is behind the modem, and your workstations connect to the router.

However, we need to be sure that the modem will work this way, and this is why I ask for a make and model. If the modem will not work on its own without being connected to a computer (i.e. will not work being connected to the router instead) then ICS is the way to go. The desktop has an existing connection, and it can be shared out to the network via the router (acting as a switch), rather than the router being the gateway to the internet for the worksations.

I do have my contact information on my profile. :)

Doing ICS is not the right way anyone as the 3G routers have come down in price.

For $99.99, a 3G router such as the MOFI3500-3GN will solve all your requirements.

These types of 3G routers were in the $300 range just 1 year ago and with that price, it is another store.

The MOFI3500 is a 300MB/s router so it is a great upgrade to replace your existing router and will work with virtually all the major provider including the Rogers rocket stick.

If anyone needs technical info, please pm me.
