This is not intended to be a HBT.

Wether you love him or hate him Barack Obama is president for another term, let's hope he can bring an end to the pain that many American citizens are feeling from the financial meltdown.
I know it is not just the USA that has this pain but normally where the US goes the rest of the world follows.
The biggest problem with politicians is that they are insulated from the real cost of living, just as an example how much good work could have been done with the tens of millions of dollars spent on the presidential campaign??

Here in our little land of Belgium it is no different,Our politicians tend to have more than one job,We have a friend who is a lawyer and a member of the government plus he is the mayor of Brugge so that is 3 paychecks and you have to ask how can he relate to the guy on the street who works 50 or 60 hours per week for just 1 salary?

Yep, he got in by a landslide, which was predictable, i.m.o. People almost always go with 'the devil they know' when both sides offer very little. Same in Australia, England, etc. where I've resided.
Yes Bill, the annual pay rises for P.M.'s always gets passed unanimously, strangely enough .rolleyes. Usually the pay rise alone is more than the average wage. ~ Corruption by the rich and powerful hasn't changed much in the last 5,000 years or so, i.m.o. The Tech. is different, but human nature is the same.

Let's just hope both sides can now get over calling each other the antichrist and actually start to work together to solve some of our problems. Stomping your feet and refusing to listen to something someone has to say because they sit on the other side of the aisle is not only stupid and childish, but detrimental to the good of all.

Oh Tibbs, always the optimist. Since he's been re-elected the Republicans are at this moment organizing to stop him from getting anything done. It's just how politics work.

I had every intention of staying out of this but you can hardly call it a landslide when all the votes haven't even been accounted for (not that it would change the outcome of the race). Not to mention, it was no surprise that he got the biggest liberal states out there (CA & almost ALL of the east coast). At this point in time, I believe the country it is almost divided into half. Half for one, half for the other. I'll keep my opinions about other reasons why to myself. :-D

I agree, a landslide would be 10% over the other guy or more in the popular vote. Going by the electoral college it is pretty lopsided though. Maybe someday we can just do away with that all together.

I think Romney could have won if he didn't suffer from so much foot-in-mouth syndrome. He and the rest of the Repulicans that made idiotic comments shot themselves in the foot.

It doesn't take a genius to know that:

    Women outnumber men.
Women do not see **** pregnancy as God's will.
Women want equal rights, not an understanding boss who lets his female employees off early so they can run home and cook dinner.

..and all the various condescending remarks they made towards them.

No to the TV, yes to the phone (but it's a cell and on the Do Not Call list) and yes to the mailbox. I kid you not, I haven't got one call OR one piece of mail. Now I'll wait patiently for my ice cream. :-D

Yeah whatever - Not my opinion, Dy - just what term the sensationalist media is spouting, that's all. Landslide or not, it is a substantial majority. And no, I'm definitely not an B.H.O. supporter, just the way it is. I'm an American Citizen still, technically, and I wouldn't support either clown if I still resided there. It wasn't cliffhanger most people thought it would be, with terms like "will be closest election in history", etc.rolleyes

Well that's what Aussie propaganda was touting, anyway. It's all relative, I guess. And I care less than naught which corrupt puppet is victorious, myself.

    E.G.:- http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&scl...66ce0929688c6e&bpcl=37643589&biw=1680&bih=927

Like you said, the terms doesn't change the outcome. I think that we're due a Federal, (a.k.a 'feral') election soon as well. Same lack-luster performance and leaders from all parties, too. Seems that people around the world have forgot how to be even credible leaders anymore, i.m.o.

The whole term "landslide' is basically rhetoric and has no qualitative meaning:-

Yeah, Phantom, that's the problem with our Electoral College system. It leads you to believe that one candidate was supported much more than they were. Most of the time our spread is closer to +/- 3 percentage points or so in our popular vote.

As far as I'm concerned, any system that allows a candidate to win the vote of the people and still lose the election (even if it only happens once...and it's happened 4 times!) because of some antiquated system that was more relevant for 200 years ago when there was no readily available information to the people and they didn't allow more than half the population to vote should be amended in our constitution.

It would also at least give third parties a chance if our President was elected through popular democratic vote. This whole idea of winner take all is ridiculous.

Not positive about this; however I've heard this election smashed the record for the total amount of paid advertising by both candidates and political action committees.

Regardless of how a person votes, it should be based on factors including a candidate's history on issues and statements in public forums such as debates - not a 30 second blurb sandwiched between ads for car dealers and "as seen on TV" products.

I have to agree. Don't get me wrong I do not really like either one of them. I do really hate that I felt like I had to choose the lesser of the two weasels, I mean evils, but I did and I based it on their records and what they've actually accomplished unlike some people I've heard like that woman who said she was voting for Obama because he gives out free cell phones or people who have said they are voting for Romney JUST because he isn't Obama, both which are asinine reasons to cast your vote.

Do I think that Romney could have done a better job? I don't know maybe, maybe not but I do know that I already have seen the job that Obama has done, and in my very humblest opinion, it isn't very good. Unemployment still hovering at 8-9%, debt raised $6 trillion, credit rating downgraded twice, just a few of the worrying examples to me.

Tomorrow, I will leave the republican party. I wanted to before the election, but did not want it to mess with my eligibility to vote.

Some of the things the republicans say or champion, is just stupid. Like todd akin (I think that is the **** guy, and others.) Idots.

Without getting too HBT, the issues are the deficit, spending, and taxation. In my opinion.

It was reported that Obama was only the second President re-elected to actually get a majority of the popular vote both times.

    The other was Franklin Roosevelt.

Most of the states have a recent predictable history of going either Republican or Democratic, so the election is primarily decided
by the so called "swing states". Obama won nearly all of the swing states except North Carolina (and maybe one other?)

Actually, there are Scores of issues. They are All important. Some people focus on just a couple and the media tends to reinforce this.

    . . . what she said.

Third party issue is dicey, though . . . our election process is so ingrained with the two party system that a third candidate would never really have a chance of being elected, but does stand the risk of being used by one party to draw votes away from the other. Some argue that this has in fact affected elections in the past. It's nice in theory, but hard to implement in my opinion.

One way to fix Washington D.C. is to put TERM LIMITS on congress.

  35. cabbiinc

Well that's not true. Clinton, Reagan, Nixon, etc.... they've all had both the popular and electoral college vote both times.

This was the first time since FDR (and the Great Depression) that a president has been re-elected with an unemployment rate over 7%.

    There are a few truths.

Both candidates failed to gather the same levels as 2008. As many as 10 million did not vote this round.

The failure of a budget will affect many Americans in drastic ways. This is due to no budget presented and lack of leadership in the Congress to pass spending. They worked 10 days since August and simply went home with no budget in place. :-o

There is nothing at all unusual about wining both the popular vote and the electoral college.

The point made was a president being elected and re-elected and wining a majority of the popular vote both times.

That of course means also wining the electoral college, otherwise he is not elected.
