off Cairns, my home town. 40 years ago, that put Cairns on the big game fishing map.

Lots of very expensive boats here now, trying their luck.

Even the angler who caught the first 1000 pounder is back.
First time he has been back, since 40 years ago.

He swears he even lost a MUCH bigger one before landing his 1000 pounder.

Lee Marvin was also a frequent visitor and keen marlin fisherman

44 Black Marlins tagged and released in 2 days. A 950 pounder was apparently tagged and released yesterday, and NO, I don't know how they "weigh" them. Bazza

Now I'm jealous......oh well....deer season starts Saturday. Maybe I'll have more success :D

They weigh them in a "hammock" don't they?

What I should have said is
" I don't know how they weigh them on the boat, out at sea".
Maybe they just take a well educated guess. Bazza

No, most fishing competitions, here in OZ at least, are tag and release. Bazza

If tag and release now, how are they getting a weight?

I go back to my original comment about the hammock weighing. The whole deal sits on the side of the boat and the fish can be dragged into the hammock within the water, weighed, tagged and then released. Boat might list a bit at 900 pounds though

Likely so. Hoisting them by the tail is only for the dead ones.

Oopsy! That post of mine shoulda been in the avatar thread. That'll learn me to have too many browser tabs open, Lol! Sorry, Baz..

But yeah, most of the big game fishing in this country at least is indeed tag and release. Presumably for the challenge excitement and prestige, if they get a big 'un. A few may get turned into trophies, but not that many. A lot of foreign tourists go for the Queensland big game fishing.

Back to the subject, a record number (54) gameboats competed. Anglers form USA, London, New Zealand, New Guinea (PNG), Zimbabwe, Denmark and Hong Kong competed against Queensland and other Australian State teams.

Day 1, 24 black marlin were tagged. A lady angler, Lorraine Stewart, caught the biggest. 950 pounds (432kg).
Next day, 25 marlins tagged. One boat, tagged, and released 6 fish in 2 days.
From Sundays paper, final results not published until next Sunday.

Just heard on the radio, 100 tagged and released.
Winning boat tagged 9 in the competition.

Looks like a great success for Cairns, though. Bazza
