    Hi Peeps

I have had my Xp Pro with Sp 2 install fail after start up and login, an issue was reported to be with a file = 486d... after this was noted it was said that the p.c needed to be restarted...well um... it never did...

Current status pc goes through post fine, but when comes time to load windows just sits there with the flashing cursor no c:\ just flashing prompt... (cry's ) :(

I have another p.c using xp, can I somehow copy the same file.. (if it exisits) from my this p.c to get my 486d issue Xp pro p.c to get this working again ?? or is there an alternative??

Any accurate advice is appreciated thankyou :)

What brand of computer is it? Google on "file 486D" gets at least one hit about a Dell driver of some sort.

    Hi

When you get the error on boot, what is the exact error message in full?

Have you tried to start in Safe Mode (F8 at boot)?

Possible is malware if the file is a random one that doesnt link to an application, so running the malware read and run me and posting in the malware forum with the attached logs might be a good idea.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

Its a generic p.c built this my self about 5 years ago.

Just got the 486D issue after logging in, and computer was required to restart, this computer hasnt been on the net for sometime...

All I can get is a cursor prompt.. safe mode F8 brings up boot menu like from which hdd to boot from.. perhaps pressing F8 to soon or something... will investigate the Safe mode option and post update.

Other than this the only other non standard things are a Winfast tv tuner card and sound blaster 7.1 audio card... evrything else is stock stndard build, oh the video card is a Geforce 5700Le 128Mb graphics if this is of any consequence.

No recent updates and no new progra,s installed. I havn't used the p.c in about 1 month, maybe longer and it was fine when last used. The p.c hadnt been on the net for about 5 months.. and had been used seemingly fine several times since last on net... so malware well...hmmm unlikely... maybe...

    Thanks for the advice :)
