Any suggestions on buying a 4k monitor?:confused I feel that this is the next big upgrade for me. Besides buying a 1TB ssd for a datastore for vmware.:major

Just bought a 4k TV. Bad time, good buys. Prices are dropping and content is coming but you don't have much out there. I would like to hear more if you do make the plunge as I admit I spent a lot of time looking at 4K TV's. I got a newer mover LG @ about $1,299 on sale, which while expensive, is what a quality 1080 TV (3D, apps, 4 HDMI + USB) were bringing less than a year ago.

I wouldn't be interested in any 4k monitor until video cards can truly push a sustained 60 FPS (they can't even SLI), and the monitors aren't capped at 30hz (most are).

Adry - 4K gaming at sustained 60 Hz is alive and well.
I am running two OC watercooled 290x's on my gaming rig. Most games hold 60 Hz with medium eye candy. I noticed you only mentioned SLI, there are other answers out there.

I love my ASUS PB287Q 28". Solidly at 60 Hz over Display port 1.2. An eye popping 1 ms response and to my eyes very nice color. I recommend it for a "buy now" solution.

But my advice is to wait at least a month and watch the monitors for Freesync support. nVidia will support Freesync as will ATI and Samsung has some great monitors coming. Just remember to watch your cable, few cables can carry 4K at 60 Hz. Also most monitors do not recognize protocols at 4K, you have to set the cable protocol with the on screen settings in the monitor.

I think you meant 60 FPS, and Ive yet to see it happen at full details with a truly demanding game. For gaming on a PC, I don't want medium details. I want it all.

Why lower quality to increase resolution? It doesn't make sense to me.

I'm planning on the 4k monitor when I get my tax return. Will see what comes around at that time.

My 3 x 970s should be able to push 4k at medium to high. With the games I play, World of Tanks and World of Warcraft.

Just to clarify, this is for gaming and not watching movies in my living room. Until content comes out for 4k, then I'll switch to that in my living room.

Adry, it is a personal choice, like all visuals. I much prefer WoW at 4K and reduced settings like ground clutter and shadow clarity. I crank up view distance and have a clear advantage over those who cannot see as far. Enemies at 4K can be recognized sooner than at 1080P, assuming you run a large monitor. At 4K the game looks like 16xFAA on 1080P with FAA off.
Yes, 60 FPS, which is also 60 Hz. I think these two terms will "marry" soon with Freesync controlling the monitor Hz to match the FPS.
We can never "have it all"; there is always "the next best thing".

I don't know. Anyway, I'm so use to running games at 60hz, I doubt buying a monitor that can support 144 hz will matter to me. I have to give it a try, If 3 gtx970s can't handle 4k, then I will report back. If it can, I'll report back.

I didn't want to start another thread. But, I'm looking at this monitor:

    BenQ BL3201PT

    A youtube video on it:

Most 4k Monitors are popular at 28". Everything I've read is that you have to scale it up, and windows 7 does not do a good job at that. WIndows 8.1 does better.

On that note, this monitor is 32".

So, this may be the monitor I'm choosing. I'll update again, if I pull the trigger on this one.

It is pricey, about $1000. But, note it is IPS, and 60hz, so no this would not be a good FPS (First Person Shooter) monitor. Those, would need 144hz monitors.

I'm looking at this since the 390x (amd) is coming soon, may want to upgrade to that. Or not. Just want to have my options open, and not buy a g-sync monitor that forces me to buy Nvidia only.

I buy what is best in the current market.

Very nice monitor. If you are buying now, one of the best.
If you can wait freesync is coming out in force and may be very useful in the future.
You will want to run DisplayPort 1.2 so plan on that and be sure to set 1.2 up in your cards' control center and on the monitor's input screen.

Well, Freesync is AMD's answer to Nvidia's Gsync. I'm content with running neither.

So, if everything is working okay, I'm planning on getting this monitor, once my tax refund comes in.

Besides, it is a 32" monitor. 4" bigger than that typical. I have to have it.

And, it seems I buy non-standard items. Hence my 30" monitor at 2560x1600 instead of 2560x1440 (norm). I have to continue. :-D

And I still plan on getting 1 TB SSD for my VMs. Got to work on that vsphere 6 deployment.

And I went in the opposite direction. I now own a Acer XB280HK. Looks odd next to my 30" HP ZR30W. But I'm playing The Witcher 3, Wot, and WoW just fine at 4k resolution. I'm happy with it. This is without G-Sync enabled. Now the wait for AMD to release their next Gen video cards. I'll be replacing my 3 970's with either two 980 Ti's or what ever AMD has.
