    Hi all,

I run an older Asus P4S mobo that has a max 4x AGP slot. The question is, will it run a card that is rated/advertised as 4x/8x.

    I have a feeling that it won't, and it definitely won't run a straight 8x (I've tried), but I thought I'd ask.

    Thanks in advance.

I believe it will and just slow the clock to the speed that the AGP bus can handle, in your case 4X. If you put in faster RAM into a Dimm slot it will slow down to a slower speed to match the CPU, normally they are rated as clock speeds of 133MHz/166MHz dicatated by the FSB Clock, but if the FSB is running at 133MHz so will the RAM. I put a RAM module into a m8's mobo yesterday which has clocks of 166MHz or 200MHz (the speed it runs at in my sys) but because his FSB is running at 133MHz my RAM backed itself off to 166MHz to better match the appropitae spped of the system. Hope this helps to clarify.

    Thanks Bold Eagle,

I had forgotten about the RAM scenario, and it now all makes sense.

All AGP8x cards SHOULD be compatible in an AGP4X system, as has been said, it would simply run at an AGP4X bandwidth. The difference would be minimal and hardly noticed if at all.

if you had trouble running an AGP8X card... i'm curious what kind of trouble you ran into? what kind of card was it? etc...

It's been a while since I put the 8x card in, so the memory of events are a bit sketchy, but the card was a GeForce2 MX440 that I borrowed from work.

The system would boot (and I think there were no warning beeps, not sure though) but the was no signal to the monitor.

I am currently using the card in my machine at work, so there was no problem with it.

as long as its labeled AGP 4x/8x it should work just fine.

Did you go into your bios and change them from onboard video to your agp slot?
