Ok guys, I need to pick your brains for some info here. Im upgrading my RAM from 1gig to 2 gigs. Currently I have 2x512 sticks and was just going to add onto that with another 2x512. However, If i was going to match up my memory (Crucial Ballistix) it would cost me almost 3 times as much as adding some g.skill or Kingston HyperX. Ive read about some compatibility problems when mixing high-performance memory so Im thinking I should just replace this set with 2x1gig sticks. Another reason is because, IIRC, running 4x512 puts excessive stress on the memory controller as opposed to 2x1gig. Also, because i'm on an older pentium 4, overclocking doesnt affect the performance of the memory controller due to Intel's crappy old chip designs (damn u netburst!)

Does anyone have something to either back this up or refute it? THANKS :major

Logically I would beleive two 1gb modules should definitely run better and be less stress overall on the system then four 512mb modules.....

I agree with Icsmith39.I would go for 2x1GB.

I don't have any technical proof other than personal experience.... and I have to agree with the other opinions above: 2 x 1gb should offer better performance than 4 x 512mb, and it would definitely be more cost effective in the long run and it leaves two slots open for future upgrading ;)

    Happy Holidays! :D

Performance memory usually runs at non-standard voltages and timings, which leads to the compatibility problems. If you can avoid it, don't mix different brands of performance memory, and don't mix it with standard memory either. :)

yup yup, thats what I was checking for with my ballistix but i didnt want to chance it. I was going to get some pc4000 but it's so dang expensive...oh well, This way I can overclock with no real goal which will make it interesting :) I picked up a new hard drive and video card as well, woohoo!

Now all i need to do is reformat and start alllll over with a nice clean brand new setup. Hopefully I'll FINALLY be able to take a go at Crysis and some other new games.
