Hi,I've been running Spy Sweeper for almost a year now with no complaints. I had 5.0 and just upgraded to 5.2 ( big mistake ) the responce to the program 5.2 is very very very slow, scanning is fast as before. It's when I get into the program and select different options and commands like sweep, shields, home, scan, ect, ect, the hour glass pause's for almost 15 seconds or more before it starts to respond to the command I have just given it. And no programs are running in the background,I only have 3 in startup,I have plenty of ram ( 640 mb ),,,,this just happen when I upgraded to 5.2 , and I uninstalled the old before installing the new. I should have never upgraded to 5.2 but it's to late now. Webroot support just tells me to uninstall and reinstall,,,,they can kiss my ____. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

    XP Pro

My PC is clean, did all my scans, the problem is Spy Sweeper.

If you have the keylogger on, try disabling that.

Some antivirus apps interfere with Spysweeper. Try temporarily disabling and see if SS runs better.

Webroot does have a SS cleanup tool. Obtain that, uninstall SS, run tool, then reboot and delete all temp files with a utility like CCleaner. Then reinstall.

Hi Goldheart,I did all the you have suggested and still no help. I've uninstalled and reinstalled SS three times now. If I cannot get this fixed in six weeks,( end of my subscription ) I'll just dump the program, hate to it's a good anti-spyware program.

Did you upgrade to 5.2 spysweeper with antivirus, or just the 5.2 spysweeper without antivirus?

    Without Anti-Virus.

I did some forum search elsewhere, and there are others who are complaining about speed issues with 5.2

Anyway to uninstall and just use 5.0 instead?

I have had few issues with Spysweeper personally. However, I do have a couple more things to try.

Sometimes Java causes issues when running at the same time as Spysweeper. For troubleshooting purposes, try uninstalling Java from Add/Remove Programs and reboot. Any difference?

If not, one more thing to try. Open Spysweeper, hold down CTRL and Alt and double-click on the Spysweeper icon. That should pop up a menu. In that menu, click "Turn SPS Off." How about now?

If the above did not help, then I recommend contacting Webroot again. If they still cannot resolve the issue, then they can probably provide you with a link to an earlier version such as 5.0 or 4.5.

Hi theefool, that was about the first thing I tried but downloading 5.0 from MG's will not work because it's a trail version, thanks again.

Hey Goldheart,I don't want to mess with my Java ( I don't thinks it's a Java issue ) but I tried the other thing you and suggested and still the same. I have requested 5.0 from Webroot, that was about 5 days ago and I'm still waiting for a reply. Thank you

SS will supply older versions. They offered 4.5 to me when I was howling about 5. Overall, I think their support sucks. And the website is pretty bad too: Their response to the blizzard of complaints about 5 slowing down systems is to "see if you can reduce the numbers of programs running in the background". Uh, yeah, thanks guys. Then they say you need enough RAM (512 I believe). Well, I have a gig and the program still is a problem. I just applied the latest update and now IE takes 10 seconds to open (2 secs with SS shut down). So, keep after them. I am hoping they will get the thing working faster. I haven't uninstalled because I am paranoid about spyware and the reviews seem to indicate that SS does the job best (in conjunction with one or two free apps--principally Adaware).

Thanks JW,your right about Webroot support it sucks big time,I'm just waiting for there reply to send me 5.0. Now if you seen my first post then you would know that I have plenty of ram and only 2 things running in the back ground the third is Spy Sweeper.

Yeah, sounds like your problems are a bit worse than mine, but the slowdown is a real drag. I wouldn't mind so much if SS would just say: "Yes, many programs will be slowed down a lot, and that is necessary for our scanner to fully protect you."
I have seen some tech folks say that 4.5 is the last reasonable version, balancing protection with speed. And it is available. Good luck.

Hey JWD, the java/SS issue almost certainly applies in your case. Try removing Java, reboot, see if its faster. If so, reinstall latest java client.

Hey, you are right! Thank you very much. I removed Java and now IE opens in 2-3 seconds. I am happy now.

I'm wondering if I even need to reinstall Java. Don't do complicated things like gaming or anything. And why would the problem not return? Should I?

    Thanks again, JWD

Well finally Webroot sent me 5.0 and things are back to normal now. It's faster than ever, click anything in the program and if you blink your eyes you missed the change to the next window :) Wooooohooooooo. Thank you guys for your help and suggestion.
    Marlene,

You do not need Java for typical web browsing. Usually only needed for games and Javascripts (which should probably be avoided most of the time!). But there are some applications that do need Java and some web sites take advantage of Java for things like IRC clients.

In any case a web site or application will inform you if it needs Java and you can decide if you if you really need it. If you do want Java again, I recommend that you download the latest Java client.

    Hey Goldheart,
Thanks again for the Spy Sweeper/Java fix.
Here is something I heard back from Webroot on the subject, FYI:

Thank you for submitting this. I have spoken to our higher level techs and they have confirmed that this will indeed speed things up. They informed me that there is a way to increase that performance without uninstalling Java if you go into Spy Sweeper and select the shields button on the left-hand side. From here, click on Browser Helper Objects and then press the button labeled 'Edit BHOs used by Internet Explorer'. Once here, deselecting the browser helper object for Java will have the same effect as removing Java without actually having to delete it from your system. Once again, thank you for reporting this! -Webroot Support

Maybe they will actually incorporate this into thier knowledge base.
