Due to upgrades have surplus hardware so am trying to put together a com for friends son for xmas..this is how it goes.. Mobo/processor was running ok until I put in another case, Now on initial boot it did go for quite a few minutes and temps were ok then went to load OS and ROM was knackered so replaced with one I knew was ok and from there onwards I just get a 5 second boot and then it powers off. All fans/lights are functioning. Problem solving is as follows. Reseated processor/heatsink .. swapped RAM/PSU... ran it out of case.. am doing this with only ram seated/connected, nothing else. Now I will say after the intial boot when I replaced ROM I plugged/connected live connector to PSU and there was a small ark in plug before it was connected properly but nothing significant. Is it possible I have shorted something and blown the MOBO.. have not yet tried another processor in it as its a 462 socket and do not have another.
    AMD 3000
    ABIT AN7
    512 DDR400
    400 WATT PSU/(tried a 550)
    any ideas GEEKS ???

arrggh...I know you dont need to hear this, but its never a good idea to connect any sort of hardware until you have shutdown your system and isolated the A/C power switch for ATX PSU's.

If the unit operates from a bench perspective (out of the case), then its possible you have some sort of shorting problem with the case mobo mounts or screw fastners once the mobo is reinserted into the case.
Those little paper washers are handy for this problem, if in doubt.

Or it is likely that some other device is incompatible if you say it runs fine at barebones with only mobo, CPU and RAM connected. (Im assuming your video and sound are onboard).

You could try adding one device back at a time, powering up after each, to see if and when, the shutdown occurs again.
Unless i am mistaken and you mean that it wont even POST after the attempted 'live' connection!

    Regards....

Perhaps I missed spelt or summit... (1) I did not connect anything whilst it was running, (2) I have the 5 second boot problem on a bench test. (3) The bench test was with the RAM installed only, NO Cards/Roms attached, just the bare bones, I seem to think this is a heatsink problem but of course I may be wrong thats why I am asking fellow Geeks for ideas.

Take the mobo out of the case ...put it on a piece of cardboard ...fire it up ...report back.

It would appear, good sir that he was posting that at about the same time you had posted your response that it was in fact a bench test.. Asking for help, then providing smart-assed replies will probably not serve you well here.

I wasn't being a smart ass just a litle frustrated and no harm was intended and I apologise to TW if it seemed that way. And yes I did not look at the time of posting and it is evident we both posted similtaneously. I stand corrected.

Problem now solved I renewed heatsink. It appeared that the lever on the old one had lost its Springyness and was not biting and sitting as tight as it should on the processor. Aplolgies again TW and thankyou for your input.:)

A bit unsepecific maybe.. The lever that goes through the copper fins with its 6 contacts had become stretched from me taking out and straightening the thumb point as thumb clasp was hitting the PSU so wasn't able to position MOBO on standoffs. It appered to the eye to be OK but I noticed that there was a small movement of the heatsink when I held it tightly and twisted when it was clamped into position, so therefore it wasn't sitting tightly enough to transfer the coolness of fins onto the Processor.

Sweet.....sometimes those little things ( that are hard to either see or diagnose ) are hard to discover ....good job on the "let's just twist this mother and ...ooops, this ain't right"

    (No offense taken.....BTW):)
