50% CPU Usage for Shaking Windows?

    Hi there,

I'm noticing my PC has started to bog down under some seemingly easy tasks. I ran CCleaner on the registry and PC. I also removed all unncessary programs, defragged, ran ad-ware, and mcafee. I have a P4 3.0 with 400 MB of RAM not being used.

If I shake a notepad window back and forth across the screen, I see it can take up to 70% of the CPU after shaking fast for 15 seconds. I don't think this is normal, is it? I don't recall it doing this when I first bought it.

Yes, I don't go shaking windows often, but when I compose an email in gmail, if I shake the mouse back and forth, the CPU hits 50%. If I type quickly inside the compose box, it hits 50% in firefox and 15% in IE. I don't recall the PC having this much of a problem with small things like this when I bought it.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dave

well, i don't have a gmail account, but shaking a notepad window on my computer reports as 11-49% CPU usage depending on how long i shake it

Just surfing back and forth on Craigslist ads makes my CPU spike to 50% depending upon how quickly I go from ad to ad. Whenever the CPU hits 50% the fan is roaring at full speed, and is pretty loud. If I try to stream a TV show on cbs.com, the fan is pretty much roaring all through the show, and you can hardly hear the show unless I cover my CPU with pillows. Even when I'm composing a reply to this forum, if I shake my mouse back and forth, the CPU spikes and the fan comes on roaring. What is so difficult for a computer to perform when you shake your mouse while composing a message?

Shaking the mouse in notepad barely does anything. Bringing Firefox to the foreground and shaking the mouse can produce up to 40% CPU usage while shaking my mouse with IE in the foreground can get up to 30% CPU usage. I notice my RAM is down to 266 MB available, I don't know if that is the reason.

Sorry cant really help you out but your post got me "shaking the mouse" and the Task manager window along with typing gibberish at lightning speed.
Well the window shake got close to 50% CPU usage.
The mouse and typing not even 10%, for a split second at most.
On the other hand I'm on a slower 1.6 Pentium [R] M proccy.
Wonder how many people here have been doing this!!! Never done something so strange on the lappy before

:-D I was ready to try this weirdness too. So I shook an editpad (I don't use notepad) window back and forth and could spike to 35% but not higher. This is on my 1GHz HP notebook from 2001, running windows 2K. YMMV depending on operating system, amount of RAM, video card etc. so it is hardly a scientific test.
I just tried it with a sample notepad text file and got close to the same results. I also looked at my Effects tab and I hav show windows content while dragging unchecked - this may cause a higher spike.
