500GB HD not recognized

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 that I ordered in Jan 2004. I installed a Maxtor SATA 500GB HD and changed the jumper to 1.5 as I didn't think my motherboard could handle 3.0Gb/s.

Rebooted several times but it just doesn't recognize the drive. All connections are in place (checked twice) and the drive is warm to touch (meaning it is getting power).

Nothing comes up, I can't even select master/slave as there is no drive recognized. I installed the drivers beforehand. And yes, the existing HDD is also a Maxtor SATA.

I feel that I may be out of luck but is there anything I can do with BIOS or do I send it back? (Which I hate to do as I got a great deal on it!)

Does the drive exist in the bios?

I'd swith the device back to 3.0, since from what I've read, even if the hdd is 3.0, and the mobo only handles 1.5, then it will run at 1.5 automatically.

 

No it is not found in the BIOS. This is what is read under Drive Configuration:

SATA Primary Drive Hard Drive
SATA Secondary Drive.....OFF
Primary Master Drive........OFF
Primary Slave Drive...........OFF
Secondary Master Drive.....CD-ROM Device
Secondary Slave Drive.......CD-ROM Device

IDE Drive UDMA................On

 

Change the "sata secondary drive" to auto. Reboot, go back into the bios. To check the drive.

 

It works now! After changing the BIOS setting for Secondary SATA drive from OFF to Auto, reconnected and rebooted....now it is working. Thanks and have a great holiday. Merry Christmas!
