hi, I think my gpu (7900gs) is on its way out , and was looking at a couple of cards, the thing is i don't no whether to get the 9800gt 512 (pny) or the 1gb (Inno) , I am using a 24'' mon' and i'm playing games at 1920x1200.

Is it worth me getting the 1gb version as i have read that most games don't use the extra memory, but have also read that at higher res the 1gb would be wise, but there are alot of contradicting arguments, .. can anyone please advise?

    :confused

from the things i have seen with my own eyes when over some different friends houses at that resolution i would go 1Gb its noticeable in my opinion
and this is based off three all most identical systems including my own just with different size video ram
seams like at lower resolutions cant tell but when in the 1900+ its starts to show

Ive always had a 512mb cards, beefed up and got a 1GB GTX 280....not sure if its cuz my 280 is just a powerhouse GPU but this thing is sweet, and the 1GB actually is detected as virtual memory. so instead of having 6GB of memory(from my RAM) shows i have 7GB(6Gb +1GB from video card) so i kind of like that :)

That's because a lot of folks just don't "see" any advantage - even in "true" side-by-side comparisons - 512Mb is a lot, after all and most programs perform just fine with that, or less. Without two otherwise identical (almost identical really does not count) computers side-by-side doing the same tasks under controlled conditions, any "perceived" performance gains is often just wishful thinking - the placebo effect. Certainly paradoxdream's argument is persuasive, but it is not likely all those machines have the exact same motherboard (and revision number) and CPU, same make and amount of RAM, or even the same firewalls, AV programs, PF setup, etc. That's not to mention whatever "housekeeping" Windows is doing on each machine, or overclocking. Only machines with exact hardware, software, and configurations can offer fair comparisons.

Sadly, you neglected to mention your budget but it is interesting to read Tom's Hardware Best PCIe Card $120 To $200, April 09 and note the 512Mb cards, and comments about 1Gb. Of course, if budget allows, there are many 2Gb boards available, and even 4Gb cards - though this one would not make a good game card - would make for unchallenged bragging rights, however.

Since some cards work better with some games, and other cards work better with other games, I recommend you visit sites that cater specifically to your favorite game or games and ask around there.

Now for me, I am not a gamer, but I use two 22" WS monitors (and will never go back to one). If running multiple monitors, more graphics RAM makes sense.
