64 3000+ trouble.

for whatever reason, my athlon 64 3000+, which had a clock speed of 1810 megahertz at a 9x multiplier has suddenly set itself to 1000 megahertz at a 5x multiplier. i have no idea on how this happened or how to fix it. if anyone knows what to do that would be awesome.

 

You'd set this simply by going into the bios and changing it there. That is of course considering the bios allows you to set it manually. Most do but some of the cheap boards don't let you.

Normally when this happens it's because there was something wrong with the chip in the first place. For example it was overheating and it got automaticly underclocked to stop it from being damaged. If this is the case simply resolving the heat issue would cause it to be reset to it's normal settings.

 

Also, what motherboard is this? So which of the many AMD 64 3000+ CPUs do you have?

 

i have a msi k8n neo4f mobo and i believe i have the venice version of the chip.

i downloaded clockgen, and that allowed me to fix the multiplier but when i restart it sets the multiplier back to 5x. i wonder if this is part of cool n quiet maybe?

 

You should be able to set this up in bios itself. Normally, most people set this as Auto. But, you should be able to force the 9x.

 

I would update your BIOS. It seems to me that it isn't detecting the CPU right and believes the stored CMOS settings are wrong and therefore picks a generic "safe" setting.

 

Ugh, you are correct. I remember reading awhile back that if the cpu is revision E / Venice core, the motherboard WILL require a bios update.
