Can anyone give me some input on software compatibility problems or issues with a 64-bit OS? Or any other problems for that matter....

If there are problems...is it still worth getting?

I'm looking at a laptop that has it. It wasn't something I was necessarily interested in (or not interested), but I like the specs of the laptop.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I am running 64bit Vista and so far have not had any problems, the only thing is that some of my old progs from XP do not always run properly :)

    Thanks Bill

I've read there can be driver issues for peripherals. I'm wondering if I'll be able to use my printer still.

Also, what are you using for security...are the free ones generally compatible?

Goto your printer manufacturer's website and check for 64bit drivers. The only issue In drivers that I have come across is that I can not get drivers for my gamepad in Vista64 that I can on my main PX's XP64. I'me using look'n'stop for my firewall and Nod32 for my Antivirus and hav not tried any of the free ones.

My Vista 64-bit had no driver problems with anything I threw at it. You're more likley to have driver problems from it being Vista than from it being 64-bit.

Oh, and I have Avast and Spybot on it, the firewall in the router, and UAC. I started with AVG 8, but didn't like it. It had no compatibility problems though.

Thanks for the info everyone. :)

Mims...the UAC is just the pop asking if you really want to do something, right? So you don't use the Vista Firewall?

Thanks MarkTrent...I actually use Comodo and really like it, so I'll keep that in mind.

I'm following this thread, and doing some mg research: I'm just not that familiar w/vista: but twice now friends around here have come up w/malware on it, and I got on malware forum, got rid of it...(thank you Tim, Chaslang...:))

But now even my old parents have vista---and since I gotta work on their os too, I wanted to put vista on on this new mobo I've been wanting to build...and if I don't do much but surf the web and email, really, and fiddle with'em...I found a 32/64 bit OS for sale--not upgrade--and wanted to get it, and do the 64 bit deal, just to see what it was like, and to get more familiar w/vista anyway...tho all my friends seem vehemtly against vista...but i've been around too damn long, and we've talking bad about *every* version of windows that I've seen, since way back when DOS was considered cool, and windows "nothing but a memory hog" :-D...

So, (way too longwinded), just appreciate people putting the pros and cons of 32-64...

Yeah, the UAC is the pop-up that asks you to confirm any installation, download, or any other action that makes potentially dangerous changes. I've heard a lot of people complain that it's nagging, annoying, and wish they could shut it off forever, but I kind of like the fact that my operating system asks for confirmation before installing anything, no matter what it is.

I was using the Vista firewall, but the firewall in the router is good enough for my needs, and using the two of them together slowed my connection to a crawl, not to mention what it did to my online gaming. Without the router, I would definitely use the Vista firewall though. I use the Windows Defender and like it a lot.

k...thanks. I've heard most of the nagging from UAC is front end anyway....when you are installing most of your apps.

I use a router, but have never turned on the Firewall. For some reason, I feel more comfortable with a software Firewall.

Anyway, it doesn't seem like there is anything that would keep me from getting 64bit which is good.

@duckfeet....I'd be shocked if any of your friends who warn against Vista actually use it or if they did, gave it a chance. I think you'll find here, on MGs, that most of the complaining was when it first came out. You really don't see it much anymore and a lot of the people here have it and seem to like it fine. As Mimsy mentioned earlier, I think there may still be some driver issues out there, but I would think that would be improving.

Probably not, since that is exactly what it did. :)

It's a good thing you're here to help me figure things out then...
