I just ordered parts for a new computer, and just a few minutes ago I read on a forum about Windows 64 bit...

The thing is that I got 3.0ghz prescott CPU, which means I won't be able to run Windows 64 bit.

Is Windows 64 bit going to be THE OS? and when? Will my new built computer go to waste soon?

    Thanks

windows XP 64 bit edition is currently in beta testing, and i believe is scheduled for release later this year.

while certain programs will benefit from 64 bit, the transforming of the PC computing world from 32-bit to 64-bit cannot happen overnight, so I wouldnt worry about owning a 32-bit processor, as it should last you just fine for the next 2-3 years.

If it's not too late to cancel your order and you would like to consider AMD64, I would say go for it. you'll get better performance than intel's Prescott core, and you would have the option to jump onboard the 64-bit operating systems in their infancy.

In any case, dont worry, I don't think XP 64 will be "THE OS" ever... I think it will be a prelude to Longhorn, which should debut in I think 2006. But i believe even Longhorn will still support 32-bit.
