what advantages are there of a 64 bit chip over a 32? (in english hehe). how much life has the 32 bit world got left, and when will applications really start taking full advantage of the 64 bit tech?

eventually, the 64bit will be supported by everything and 32 bit will start to fade away, but with time. I'm not going to upgrade to a 64bit until more applications are supported, so possibley a few years time. There are many people on here that use the 64bit and are pleased with it, so i assume its ok at the moment...

give it a few years though and 64bit will take over.

so is there a big difference on pc perfomance? or no because app's dont take full advantage of it yet? is it way faster?

i'd guess that the 64 would be faster, but as i said not all aps. support it yet. it may be faster and you would most likely see some difference in performance, but its up to you.
perhaps if someone with experience of a 64bit cpu could post and give more info, sorry i haven't helped much!

It'll take a long time to take over. Hell, some of us are still using W98SE on a P2/400. :D ;) Bazza

Some games support 64bit processors, I am sure I remember reading the back of one... anyways... I am happy with mine... just waiting for windows64 to get the full advantage....

Using the current software architecture commonly available, upgrading to a 64 bit system would be a bit premature unless you want the latest and greatest. I have a side business of building and upgrading computers for people and recently sold my rig out from under myself, I used the profits to buy a socket 939 AMD 3000+ with an MSI Neo2 Ultra board. This was to replace a Barton core 2500+ socket A. The difference in performance is quite noticable (especially after I gave it a 450 mhz overclock). But like I said for most applications the 32 bit systems are fine for now, but if you like playing the new games like HL2 or Halo2 with all the eye candy go 64 bit with that shiny vid card.

Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster here.

    Hi,

I think if you are going to build a new amd based system you may as well go 64, it ain't that much more for socket 754 although socket 939 will upgrade better in the future it is quite a bit more compared to athlon xp
