64-bit, Vista, and RAM

Ok. I just bought a Dell computer (the specs are in my signature). It has 4gb of RAM and yes, we all know XP and Vista don't support that much.

I read that if you get the 64-bit version it will support 4gb+. Now, I must ask... the 64bit version of what? Do I need to buy a new CPU or just a new OS?

64Bit version of Vista as Vista comes in two guises 32bit and 64bit, no need for new hardware, as its software related, your Core2Duo is 64bit CPU.

However the only version that comes with both 32bit and 64bit Vista in box is the full retail Ultimate version all the others only come as 32bit as standard, you have to specifically buy the 64bit versions of Basic, Home Premium or Business, you can access this Via this page http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx or buy from your local/favoured retailer.

Dont off hand know he cost of the Alternative Media if bought via the MS link in AUS, but IIRC its only the cost of shipping you pay for.

But you can only still install either 32bit or 64bit using your serial on one PC, just because you would have two versions of Vista doesnt mean you can install say 32bit on one PC and 64bit on another.
