6600 gt doesn't support 8-bit?

I got my hands on a copy of the PC version for FF8, and it uses D3D for its rendering. There's just one problem though:

It's saying that my XFX geforce 6600gt is failing its 8-bit palette testing. This video card has the latest forceware installed for it.

I've played the game a few minutes, and the movie graphics are no where near the quality of the psx version, and the non-movie screen (grr, don't know what else to call it >_>) have blocks about an inch wide and high, scattered throughout the view.

What can I do to fix this?

I call BS on that reply though, they're just too lazy to get a solution >_>

I've tried looking around for anything to enable 8-bit support...Not even coolbits is helping me out here.

    This is interesting...

When I open up the display tab, I'm only allowed to go down to 16 bits, but when I click advanced and then on the 6600gt tweaking program (or whatever it is forceware puts in there), I can go down to 8-bits without any problem.

Yet the ff8 config still tells me the 8-bit palette test fails, even while I'm in 8-bit mode...so...I'm clueless...

Its prolly just a bug in the game. None of my old games run on my X850. Id try ePSXe thow. Its a bit hard to get working but once you have it working its great :).... You prolly dont have a FF8 PS CD thow do you...

I have one, but I want to use the pc version so I can play Chocobo's world on it .

I guess I'll see if rivatuner can do any anti-aliasing magic.

    Getting a bit closer here...

Rivatuner will only allow the adjustment of directx7 and higher applications.

The FF8 install gave the option to install directx 6.1, but I didn't do it.

Should I install 6.1? If I do so, will it nuke 9.0c?

It will likely nuke your OS if it even installed.

Its an older game, I'm surprised XP supports it.
