I've been looking at these to cards and can't decide. They both have 8 pixle piplines and their 128mb Ram versions are realitively the same price on new egg. Whats the real difference here? Which one is actually better?

its possible to unlock the extra pipelines on the 6800xt. Ive heard its stable at 12 but when the full 16 gets unlocked, it gets a lil shaky with artfacts and such. Not sure which is better stock tho..

i'm going pci-e. Your sure that none of the pipelines are damaged, that most people have had sucess softmodding the card?

read the reviews, they seem to do just fine when unlocking the extra pipelines

You will need a MOBO that has a PCI-e slot to use a PCI-e graphics card.
    What slot do you have?

Unlocking pipes & shaders is hit & miss kinda of thing, some do better than other's some not at all, even of the same exact brand & model

I have an Leadtek WinFast A400LE, A 6800LE "AGP interface" stock is 8 pipes & 4 vertex shaders, I was able to unlock all pipes 16 & one more shader to 5 using "Rivatuner"

RiviTuner is great tool for unlocking pipes & Overclocking, my video card now runs at 6800GT speeds, not bad for $140 card

If your interested in a particular Video card to try to unlock post the exact brand & model, maybe I can help.

Sometimes a simple Google of your choice of cards can provide a Butt Load of info or bring to light specific problems for a given brand er model.

    I'd be looking at a 6800GS.

    Very fast, and extremely well-priced.

never mind. a friend of mine convinced me to go with a Radeon X1600XT. No sli, and i'm not going crossfire (which is great because i'm going to save money), but whatever. The x1600XT is a 5000+ 3dMark05 scoring card anyway. I'm happy.

3Dmark05, and 06 especially, favour certain features of the card, like HDR/Shader Model 3.0.

Cards that don't have that are at a disadvantage and appear slower (even though they may be faster, like the X850XT) as they return lower marks.

The Radeon X1600XT isn't a bad card for the money, but ignore 3Dmark scores and focus on things that really matter.

Artificial benchmarks mean nothing in real world use.

BTW, why buy an SLI board, then use an ATI card?

Yea, I'm changing a lot on my computer right now. Like I'm not going with an SLI board. I'm going with the TForceU board now with the nForce 4 Ultra chipset.
