   I have Windows 7 RC, and I want to downgrade to XP before the experimental period is over. Before I try it, is it possible to do this without using USMT?

   Yes as Windows 7 is a new OS so your PCs defsult OS was likely XP or Vista, need to clean install the previous OS.
   
   
   Hardware (make and name if OEM like Dell, HP etc) and PC specs would be good also?

   Acer Aspire One. And I could easily do a clean install, or an OEM install from the OEM partition, but I want to keep my files and settings. USMT is a pain in the rear. Looks like I'm gonna have to purchase the final build. (or torrent it )
